24 hour urine test: Hold supplements?
My first 24 hour urine test came back with high calcium in my urine. I take calcium, vitamin D and magnesium supplements. I am concerned my results were high because of the supplements. Were you advised by your doctor to go off the supplements for the test?

I had two 24 hr urine tests to check for high calcium. For my first urine test, my endocrinologist told me to take my calcium pills as I normally do. My calcium came back high. Now I am doing a second 24 ur urine test where I was told to stop taking my calcium pills for the week prior. Then the two tests will be compared.
Hi @ripley, curious what did your endo order the 24hr urine tests for? Are they for investigation of secondary cause for osteoporosis or something else? Are you on any drug(s) for osteoporosis currently?
There are many different answers to this question about stopping supplementation before taking a 24 hour urine cal test. Here is a simple answer given to me by my doctor.
'Normal urnine calsium levels are determined from groups of patients who are not taking calcium supplementation. If a patinet is taking calcium supplementation, some of that cal will be released and added into the urnine. Therefore you must stop taking cal supplementation to accurately compare to normal levels in people not on supplementation. This makes sense - yes? If you want to compare to normal levels on supplementation, you would have to have group of patients taking ex 500mg a day with yourslef taking 500mg a day. Lastly a doc may be evaluting kidney function for another reason and wants to see what is happening on supplementation - that is a different question. Hope this helps.
