Going Through TKR Post Op day 3, Is it worth having done?

Posted by mcgrathcreative2 @mcgrathcreative2, 1 day ago

Hey, I’m on day 3 after my surgery. I am shocked at how much pain I am in. And the swelling is off the charts. Someone give me some positive advice please. I feel like I really made a bad decision to get the TKR with as much pain I am in

Hang in there, it is a lot of pain, don’t spare with pain killers the first weeks so you can exercise hard. And a lot of ice!!!!
I remember crying with special one exercise, but my PT always told me it’s worth it, so true…
It will get better after a few weeks.
Everybody is different, it took me a whole year to be fine.
I had 2 reverse shoulder replacements but this knee …wow.
Just take extremely care, that you don’t fall, that’s what I did 2 times afterwards, which made it not better.
After all yes it was worth it because before I couldn’t walk anymore.
Good luck, a prayer is on your way ♥️

The TKR is definitely worth the short period of time you will have pain. Yes, definitely take your pills for pain as it's only for a short time. I have had two knee replacements, one in 2014 and one in 2016. It has opened up my life. Without it I'd be an invalid and have a very narrow life. I now walk and travel with no pain and no restrictions. Yes the initial period after the surgery is tough, but it will get better.

Yes. Wait until the black and brushing starts. 10 days in and still bad throbbing pain that won't go away. Ice only minimum help. Topical stuff does not even put a dent in the pain. Has anyone had luck with topical like biofreeze or Voltaren? Good luck to all.

It was worth it to me. Take your pain meds... don't wait until you have pain. Chasing the pain won't work as well. Stay ahead of it. If you need to talk to a member of your surgeon's care team then do it and see what they have to say.

Got to get a hold of that pain! What did your team order? I had Celebrex (NSAID) twice a day, 1000mg Tylenol three times a day and Oxycontin 5mg (1-2 tablets) every 3 hours. I never had to take more than 1 tablet of OxyContin, but I religiously stayed on that routine initially, even keeping it at bedside for when I woke up.
I never took that much pain meds in my life but I wanted to stay ahead. I had to take something for my stomach as all those pills were a bit much. And of course, a stool softener! The team knew what they were doing as I was comfortable ( aside from PT times later).
I also used an ice machine to keep that knee iced. And elevate that knee, but try to keep it straight when on pillows.
Contact your team and get on them for relief. Try to exercise as directed as well.

Best wishes.

I was instructed not to utilize any lotions until the incision was completely healed.

I've had a poplar opposite experience with my TKR at Mayo. I spent one night in the hospital where they monitored my pain level constantly. Since my release, I've noticed less pain than I'd had prior to surgery.

I did have a massive amount of swelling and bruising. The bruises were throughout my leg but most was in my calf and back of my thigh. I'm on a blood thinner and wear a thigh-high compression stocking.

Ice and elevation along with the appropiate pain meds are important. I'd reach out to my care team and express how much pain you're having.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I'd edit my comment, but it appears that's an administrative task.

My TKR was 2 weeks ago today. I'm walking with a cane 95% of the time.

Hi, I experienced moderate pain after each knee replacement which I had staged two weeks apart. I was prescribed Celebrex and OxyContin post op so my pain was tolerable after day 3 following each replacement. I feel the surgery was extremely worthwhile. I am five months postop, and doing well.
My bowed legs were straightened during the surgery, plus I can hike up to 8 miles now . Still have some stiffness at night, but no pain. I attribute the success of my surgery to the physio I was instructed to do plus I started walking right away. I wish you the best success..
