These are my stepchildren grandchildren. In the beginning I didn't want to step on their grandmother 's domain, so I suggested Neecy because my name is Denise and children cannot pronounce that.

About 2 years ago my granddaughter came to visit me and we're eating dinner and she announces and points her finger at me and says you are my Grandma. And I responded by saying yes I am. Since then she calls me Neecy and refers to me as Grandma Neecy. I'm the only grandma who got the grandma name.

This is so delightful to hear! Children can have huge hearts. My husband Rich is also a step-grandfather (my first husband died when a young man). We vaguely have tried to explain this, but our granddaughter does not care at all. Then she heard the story of Cinderella and said wonderingly: Rico (his family nickname) isn't wicked at all. In fact, he is very nice!
I'm a huge fan of the sometimes unsung position of step parents, who can give so much.
