Diverticulitis

Posted by foxj @foxj, Jul 1 5:12pm

I am currently being treated for my 3rd episode of diverticulitis, only 8 months from my last episode.
Someone told me that he was plagued with it too but was told to try odorless garlic soft gels every day. He said it has really worked for him. Has anyone else had success with this?

I believe I have been having short bouts of diverticulitis not knowing what they were and recovered in two or three days, Two weeks ago, I had the worst pain and could not stand nor walk, Went to ER and the CT scan said diverticulitis with no abscess.
The pain got worse so I went to another ER.. CT scan said diverticulitis with perforation and abscess.
I was admitted and an interventional radiologist drained the abscess. Not fun. I have a rare e-coli and one other infection.
I'm home now on a PICC line and IV antibiotics. Surgeons keep talking me into a resection. I'm 78, have immunocompromized, and very weak. I could not deal with this alone. Has anyone gone to rehab after their resection?

I posted my history on my last post. I am clicking reply. There is a box underneath of another comment and it says to post comment. Do I comment twice and post twice?

Hello @pekoe01

Here is a link to a discussion about surgery for diverticulitis.

If you post your question in this group, you may find others who have been in this situation themselves.

Yes, my biggest fear after ER visit was emergency surgery.
I was lucky it was abscess instead of rupture. It gave me the time to heal and being on the med's helped me stay in shape for surgery.
There really is no cure or diet you can stay on without getting proper nutrition.
Good luck.

PS - if you feel you are getting another episode. DO NOT eat for 2-3 days and drink a lot and take Advil and Tylenol at separate times Fasting is the best to heal quicker.

Yes the diet is so opposite of my regular healthy lose weight build muscle routine I've been following! Do you think when symptoms arise that you should have CT Scan to confirm? I've just experienced 3rd episode last was 6 years ago and thought I was done! PCP prescribed antibiotics wo scan based on my history...week later feel much better but hope I don't gain weight back from this unhealthy diet! Travel planned in January and how to be certain no flare? Your docs sound good, where located? Thanks for any information!

The only time I had the CT scan was the ER visit. Previous episodes I had blood work which showed the high level of inflammation and infection which prompted the meds. and fasting for a couple days then low residue diet.
I am sure Your travel plan in January is causing you stress due to uncertainty of an episode.
My doctors are in Greenville, S.C.

Good to hear you are feeling better.
Enjoy your trip and enjoy the gardens and friends.
Stay away from too much fiber and drink plenty of water.
If you can have Camomile tea at night and yogurt and probiotics between meds
And you should be active and that is great for your digestion.

I love Yogi Lavender Stress Free tea! Now able to enjoy a little of my fair trade, organic, freshly ground beans coffee! Probiotics every night...never stopped, maybe just 1st night of episode. I've been doing plant based yogurt...maybe can't add my FlavCity or Truvani protein powder? Perhaps no cocktails this weekend either!😐
