Biopsy Results
Hi everyone, I’m trying to make sense of my endometrial biopsy results. I’ve been able to see this on my online file, but my doctor has not contacted me yet.
It says: Endometrium, biopsy:
- Scanty strip of superficial endometrial cells
- Small fragment of squamous cells
When I see the word squamous, it makes me freak out. I have nobody to ask, so I thought I’d try here.
Thanks for any help or advice,
Beth

Don't freak out. I'm not a doctor, but squamous cells are a normal cell type, different from "squamous cell carcinoma" that you're probably worrying about. I don't know whether or not they should be in an endometrial biopsy (They're definitely found normally in the cervix). But you should talk to your doctor before getting all worried.
You didn't mention why they were doing a biopsy, but my guess from this report is that they will think this sample is inadequate and will want to do a D&C to get a more complete sample.
Thank you! That is what I was wondering, whether squamous cells are normal or if they’re always bad. I appreciate your advice!
@bethmcbab If you do not already have an appointment then I encourage you to call and ask the doctor call you to discuss these results. Test results are often released to the patient before the patient has the opportunity to talk with the doctor and that can cause a lot of anxiety.
Do you have a follow-up appointment with your doctor?
@naturegirl5 yes I do have an appointment on Dec 11. I wish I hadn’t looked at the results, they are worrisome.
Thanks!
@bethmcbab It’s great that you have appointment however that’s a few weeks away. I know what you mean about looking at results as soon as they arrive in the patient portal. Sometimes those results are reassuring and then other times there is confusing information or information I don’t understand. Since you did look at the results would you like to message your doctor on the portal? Or call and ask for a phone conversation?
Where I’m from (smalltown Canada) there’s no option to send messages so it’d have to be a phone call.
