Single Mastectomy: What will Recovery Time be like? How long?

Posted by DebCF @sparkyf, Oct 6, 2023

I will be having a single mastectomy in October. I plan on going flat. What will the recovery be like and how long does it take to feel good again?

I'm three weeks out from a s8ngle mastectomy. Although the surgeon offered the option of a lumpectomy, I felt more comfortable with the mastectomy. This was a recurrence after 33 years. The fact that it came back caused an emotional rollercoaster. The mastectomy eased my fears about another recurrence.

I began my post about a single sided mastectomy and didn't complete it. I'm three weeks out after a recurrence from 33 years ago. I'm doing well, much better after the drains were removed. My range of motion is returning. I'm still very tired and will be reassured after I see my surgeon on Monday. It's two more weeks before I see the oncologist, and it feels like a long wait. My medical practice employs a breast cancer nurse navigator, and she has been a tremendous support. They also have a breast cancer support group. I participated last week, but I really feel as if my recurrence caused apprehension from members to the group.

I can understand why that would bring some anxiety to support group members. We all think about recurrence until it happens, then we think about the next one.
Every breast cancer patient I know has some level of anxiety over it. Mastectomy changes those odds, I am happy that you are doing well with the decision. 33 years is a pretty great run.💕
How are you feeling now? Any further treatments planned?

thinking about having other side done as annoying with one only for clothes etc .no pain , or any problems . you do get used to it very quickly . all the best .

Hi, I had single mastectomy for invasive Ductal carcinoma 12 days ago. I was able to have a prefilled implant the same day so no expanders. Yay me. I’m off all pain meds accept for OTC. I still have a drain in and THATS’s a drain. I feel good but take a couple of naps every day. I’m actually surprised and grateful that my recovery is going so well. I’m 70 years old but still think I’m in my 40s….best wishes to you for a smooth recovery and to be cancer free!❤️🤟🌈
