Managing Hip Bursitis Pain

Posted by donnajones @donnajones, Nov 14 6:04am

I have what has been diagnosed as bursitis in my right hip for almost a year now-steroids will relieve for a brief period of time . I can’t sleep of a night because that is when the pain is the worst. The only non pharmaceutical relief I have gotten is sound wave therapy has anyone had this and tried something that worked. This is now even bothering me when I walk of a day.

@heyjoe415 sorry for all of the incorrect autocorrect. 😉
Will try ice and voltaren gel on son’s pinky finger. 🖐️🧊

NBD Hope, happens all the time.

I don't know much about Lyrica. I have a friend at the gym, a woman who is 80, and she's had a lot of fusion work on her spine and is in a lot of pain. She just told me this week that her Dr had prescribed Lyrica and it seemed to work, but that's just one, small data point.

Here's a link from WebMD:
https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-93965/lyrica-oral/details
It has "gaba" in its pharmaceutical name. People have had trouble with gabapentin, so again, I'd ask your Dr about the drug and if it's appropriate for you.

Sorry about your son. Ice should work and possibly Voltaren gel. I use Voltaren gel on my shoulder and it provides some relief.

I found anti-inflammatory injections a life saver. Either at the hip or at the sacral joint. First lasted 6 years, then 3, 1.5, 6 mo. and than nothing. At that point my hip needed replacement. It was a misalignment of the hip joint, which expressed itself as "bursitis." Make sure they do an MRI and see a hip surgeon if you can't find a resolution. Bursitis goes away; a degenerating hip joint does not.
Pain relievers along the way: Diclofenac gel 3%, Biofreeze, sleeping with a pillow in between my knees (still do that to this day 12 years later!); yoga, stretching, and walking. Watching my posture and exercising the hip joint muscles to maintain strength and support. Watch the weather and see if you are worse when it changes, will rain or gets humid - then you can deal with anti-inflammatories and topicals. Loved my heating pad!
Try inserts in your shoes. Go to a professional podiatrist or the Comfort Foot Store and have someone check your leg lengths and your gait. When my hips were evened up with the inserts that helped take the pressure off at the joint for a while.
I find the doctor's term for all hip pain these days "bursitis" and it's just the code used to get an initial diagnosis, although it is mostly wrong. But they have to start somewhere. Good luck!

I have knee bursitis. Steroid shot & an anti inflammatory did not work.
Like others I use frozen peas wrapped in a towel & it does numb the pain
awhile. I also rub in Volterin/ Walgreen's brand is less expensive & doctor recommended. Also go to the physical therapist which seems smartest since one needs to build muscles.
Had spinal fusion & a hip replacement in 2012 & after physical therapy
could WALK NORMALLY AGAIN!!.....use the Tylenol labeled for arthritis
which may also help. Good luck; don't give up! K

Yes I am at the point I’m ready to get a steroid shot in the hip. Can’t take antinflamatory meds cause of my kidney function. But also am going to get some ointment for external application. You know I read an article you can have your bursa removed with no effect on your joint and within 6 months most people have a new one grow back. Can you believe it? Well I am trying steroid shot first and hoping that works. Thanks for the info and no worry I’ll never give up.😊

Hey by the way did your bursitis bother you more at night than any other time?

This bursitis in my hip is worse at night laying down. At first a pillow worked but not anymore. I have one position I can now sleep in on my back. It surely does disrupt my sleep. I’m going to try a steroid shot. If that doesn’t work I did read an article you can have your bursa removed. Who knows like you say maybe that’s not even it, they haven’t xrayed or scanned my hip yet. Thanks for your reach out much appreciated.

Sounds like Science Fiction= growing back your Bursa.
But I will inquire. "Dry needling" was also suggested & can be done
by a doctor or physical therapist.
Our family doctor said he could try a smaller steroid dose shot which
might not give me stomach pains. I am also getting a scan (MRI?CT?)
to see if I have some other malady. Dying is ok but suffering is not,
which he claims most people say....

You are quite welcome. I have experienced your kind of pain. We are more sensitive at night when it’s dark and we are sleeping. It finally all disappeared for me when I had both hips replaced, and then L3, L4, L5, fused and stabilized. It was a long journey, but it gave me lots of knowledge. It also made me learn how to advocate for myself. It also helped me know what to ask for. My doctors like it when I come armed with information and can be more articulate about my pains. The steroid injection is a cortisone, but there’s also strong anti-inflammatories
NSAID which can be used. You’ll get there just start with the foundation. It’s like building a house looking in doesn’t tell you what in the walls. You have to go down to the studs and frame to understand the structure of the house. Keep on investigating and managing.🙏🏼💐❤️

My Voltaren gel for arthritis shows it has NSAIDs so may not be an option for you.

The Lidocaine may be a temporary relief option. Tylenol, too. If you have inflammation, ice packs may be better than a heating pad. Heat may make the symptoms worse.

I have tried all of the above and think I may need to see a pain specialist for nerve ablation. The pain in my hips after lumbar surgery is excruciating at times and believe a nerve was injured or compressed causing pain to radiate to hip/hip flexors.

Nerve pain is the worst!

Hello, I think you should definitely see a Pain specialist doctor. You just need to find a medication that helps you. What works for one person, may not work for another. I used Nervive, sold over the counter at drug stores like Walgreens or Walmart. It comes in cream or tablets. And I took the pills (tablets) everyday for a few months. I was waiting for my hip replacement surgery coming up. And it did help quite a bit. Good luck to you. There is also a homeopathic leg cream, with brand name Magnilife.

Try the over the counter product called Nervive, in pill form. It helped me alot when I was waiting for hip replacement surgery. I also used a leg cream by homeopathic brand Magnilife. Good luck! You may want to find out if you have osteoarthritis in your hip/hips. My doctor thought it was bursitis too, but I eventually had x-rays and an MRI which confirmed I had advanced osteoarthritis of my left hip. And my groin pain, and leg pain was from the osteoarthritis in my hip. I have now had hip replacement surgery and all the pain is GONE. Good luck!
