Called festination this gait disturbance can be helped with physical therapy. If your steps quicken as a balance protection caused by leaning forward, you might try physical.
It can result from certain medications. If the cause is Parkinsons relief might be found in deep brain stimulation.
If you haven't seen a doctor to rule out parkinsons you might.
One of the physicians I used to see had this gait disturbance usually resulting in a freeze where he could't move. His cause was Parkinson's and he continued to work pausing frequently.
