Muscular skeletal disorder. How to live with this?

Posted by sunny65 @sunny65, Oct 24 5:40pm

I have a severe osteoporosis and joined this forum in April. Mainly talking with other members who going through various osteoporosis drugs. Also I been in debilitating back pain for 6 months. Started in my lower back but suddenly started spread all over my back and sides. After multiple visits to the doctors I found out that besides my osteoporosis I have some musculoskeletal disorder. Not sure how to live with this. Is there anybody here who has this problem? Maybe I can get some advice. Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. Everything was just fine with me 6 months ago. I lost 20 pounds in a very short time. I was skinny before. I thought this happened because I recently found out that I have a severe osteoporosis and have a few spinal fractures and I thought that osteoporosis medication contributed a lot of pain as a side effect . I was very active before and I am in mid sixties. I been going to various doctors and nobody can explain why I suddenly got this debilitating pain all over my back. I am still able to walk but becoming harder and harder. Finally doctor who I been seeing for the last 3 months started taking about some muscle skeletal disorder. Without offering any solutions. I am going to seek a second opinion.

Have had diagnostic MRI that produces digital disc of MRI results and radiologist text reports to learn what's going on plhysically inside my body.

A Rheumatologist may be able to help you with these issues. Also there are alternative methods for hormonal replacement therapy with physicians online. I’m sorry you are experiencing that - I understand. Sending hugs

Has Anyone told you exactly what musculoskeletal disorder you have? That term is so general it could mean many things. I would try to get a specific diagnosis so you know what you’re dealing with. I hope you have a good osteoporosis specialist and will find a good doctor to help you with the other problem suggested by your MRI. Most musculoskeletal problems can be helped at least symptomatically so you should feel better once on proper treatment.

Thank you for writing to me. I don’t have a good endocrinologist. I was working with PA she prescribed Evenity for osteoporosis ( I had a 5 injections so far) and she left her position. I ended with the doctor who she was working for. She is osteoporosis and fracture specialist but not real endocrinologist she told me to see her in May after I finish my 12 injections of Evenity . I am finding out that not a lot endocrinologists dealing with osteoporosis. They don’t know about medication. I been in debilitating back pain for 7 month now and working with pain specialist. He is not able to help only prescribed Tramadol ( this does not work anymore), I hate it because it gives me bad headaches and he sent me to very young neurosurgeon who told me that my spine has not right posture ( swayback syndrome), cannot do surgery due to very weak bones and sent me to therapy where I was showed a couple exercises, given pictures and sent home. I found a different therapist on my own. He is trying very hard but he is working mainly manually and I afraid to fracture my spine again even he is being very careful and aware about my 4 fractures in my vertebrae. I done MRI , bone scan and CT scans and blood work . Blood work is fine. MRI showed older fractures. Maybe need a new MRI again. I tried to get an appointment with endocrinologist who is dealing with osteoporosis but the wait is one year (!!!) . Not sure if my osteoporosis medication is working for me because my bone density got worse since I started it.Not sure what I am going to do.

Did your doctor have a name for the "musculoskeletal disorder" that he said you have? It sounds like your doctor didn't give you any advice on possible treatment?

Thank you for writing to me. You are right - he given me a few different diagnosis one day and then changed his mind. Last was “ swayback syndrome “. I am in severe pain every day. All I know that I have to re- train my posture. It’s hard to do because I have 4 fractured discs in my vertebrae. That’s why my muscles are too tight and “ not communicating “ with my bones. He sent me to therapy and therapy didn’t help a bit. A couple exercises and some pictures to take home. So, I found a new therapist on my own and working with him. Different approach. He basically works manually straightening my spine. He been very careful about fractures. I am still in a lot of pain. But hoping something will change at the end. I also have a severe osteoporosis which developed very fast and no doctor can answer why. I don’t have a good endocrinologist- just a general practitioner who specializes in osteoporosis. All this developed in a seven month. I went from happy, active, life loving person to absolutely sad and barely surviving my pain on Tramadol. Which I hate to take but there is nothing else helping with this torturing all day and often night pain.

might be a degenerative disc condition which comes with aging for some people when the muscles weaken and the bones are not kept in order. Try a MFR guy/gal Deep Myo-fascial Tissue Release. There is an MFR section in this group! I should have done it YEARS ago. It wouldn't have changed my surgeries but I would have known more clearly which is due to bone and which is due to muscle. Your muscles glue together and cause pain moving as a group and pull on the bones. The myofascial release helps relax the tension and pulling. It's like a super painful message. But well worth the money. It takes a very long time when you are older like me and have repetitive use muscle damage and a spine out of alignment. Try natural remedies to see if you can get pain relief but medicine is great too. You will have to keep knocking at the doctor's door to get them to dig deeper. They just dismissed you.
Get into Rehab and PT so a trained therapist can work with you and help isolate issues. Also strengthen muscles properly should also provide relief and direction. Good luck. In the meantime find a good orthopedic spine surgeon so if the time comes you will be in good hands. Took me 20 years but I LOVED my lumbar spine surgery. Some of the pain management doctors who were specialists in relieving lumbar spine issues were great along the way. Watch out for those who want a reliable buck off our woes and don't treat you as an individual and do a one size fits all model. Good luck!

Here is what Mayo Clinic says about kidney stones:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/kidney-stones/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20355759
Her is what Texas Urology has to say about using apple cider vinegar to dissolve kidney stones:
https://texascenterforurology.com/posts/self-care-for-kidney-stones/
It appears that it may help to dissolve stones, but also to prevent formation of new stones.

If this is a chronic issue for you, have you consulted a urologist? They can determine the chemical composition of the stones and suggest dietary changes to prevent formation of new stones.

I'm so sorry that you're experiencing this pain Sunny. I'd certainly find another Dr, and ideally get an MRI of your spine to see what's going on.

You said you are in your mid 60s and were very active before taking medicine to treat osteoporosis. Seems like statins cause muscle problems in about 20% of patients. Not sure if the osteoporosis meds have the same effect.

It's strange that this developed so quickly. It may be arthritis somewhere in your spine, but the effects of that usually result in sciatica, causing pain in the back of the legs.

Please let us know what your new Dr has to say. In the meantime, all the best to you.

Joe
