How do you eat during chemo when everything tastes bad?

Posted by steveron @steveron, Sep 21 8:01pm

my wife was able to eat during Folfirinox chemo, but now she is on gemcitabine/abraxane and everything tastes awful so she is not eating.
Lidocaine solution would numb her taste buds, but eating isn't recommended while using it.
Straws work for liquids and she can drink protein shakes.
She hasn't tried ice chips yet.
Alcohol would also work, but it is isn't approved during chemo.
Anybody found something that worked for you?
Thanks.

I find that fruit was easy to eat and also eat a lot of ice cream.

Our oncologist said something similar. My wife has had some success with Glicerna protein shakes. Best wishes to your brother.

I had the worst time with chemo. I threw up 24/6 . I started eating Lemon Heads and it was a life saver. Hope this helps. Prayers for your family.

That's so awesome Lemon Heads worked for you. Nothing really worked for me but what I did notice was if my stomach was empty, i felt more nauseous. I focused on protein diet (even though I had no appetite i made sure I still ate a little) and in the end, it got better. My mom would make me bean based protein drink (home made and it's easy, you can buy the soy milk maker and takes less than 10 minutes). Every single meals were tough but I made sure I ate something even though it was not easy, didn't want to be more nauseous. I learned my lesson after cycle 3, when the time I barely ate and drank, , then ended up at ER (where my neck lymph nodes were severely swollen and painful). After cycle 5, still nauseous but did/felt better than cycle 1-4. I forced myself to drink lots of water (and oddly, it had to be in a glass cup only) and home made soy milk and ate varieties of what I could eat.

Protein consumption (Mainlyeggs, salmon, tofu and chicken thigh); Homemade soymilk.

Vegetable consumption: Carrots, Broccoli (sometimes I can't stand looking at it but during recovery week, I try to eat it), watercress and spinach. Oh! and I make a simple homemade tomato juice (and I put a little of honey/brown sugar).

Lots of varieties of fruits and soup!

Exercise: I try to walk everyday whenever I can.

Hi @lynnlambert, good to hear that you've found foods that you can eat. How are you doing today? How many chemo treatments do you have left?

I’m doing much better and my body is responding well to treatment. My doctor prescribed the patch like is worn on a cruise to prevent seasickness. It’s been a miracle for me 🥰

My husband lost 100 lbs during folfox treatment. ( he was overweight). He said everything tasted metallic and couldn’t eat. I read on line that 20% of all cancer patients die from malnutrition. I told him this and he started eating again. The nutritionist suggested Fiji water as it has minerals and electrolytes. We have been drinking it since. Expensive but great H2O.

Hello @bnjncrew

As it has been a while since you last posted, I was wondering how your husband is doing. Will you post an update when its convenient?

We lost Bob on November 5th. He put up a strong fight for 2.5 years when he was originally told he had 6 months. I thank Dana Farber for giving him those 2 extra years and the opportunity to have quality time with his family and especially his three grandaughters. I thank you all here for the inspiring posts and support.
