Newly diagnosed Metastatic Prostate Cancer

Posted by rxgolfer @rxgolfer, Nov 4 4:37pm

Aloha all,I’m 67 y.o. Had recent biopsy - Grade group 4 in 2 of 12 samples. PET scan showed multiple lymph nodes in left pelvic area that lit up. Last PSA was 22. See MD this Friday to go over PET results.
I’m in Oklahoma. Have researched Mayo Clinic in Phoenix (relative lives near there), friends in California are recommending UCLA, UCSF, or Stanford. Gathering info at this point. Plan on fighting this disease as best I can, not gonna take no or let’s wait and see for an answer. Anyone been seen at Mayo cancer clinic in Phoenix, AZ ?

I'm 71 and in late June 2024 I had bilateral NS RALP surgery at Mayo Phoenix. I'm not a medical professional, but as a patient I can recommend Mayo Phoenix as I felt I received world class care. That said, I'd have felt comfortable at any recognized cancer center of excellence. I believe the other 3 institutions you mentioned are also recognized cancer centers of excellence. I don't know the best way to pick between them, but I suspect it'll partially depend on which treatment plan you choose to pursue. Best wishes to you and yours.

I also had nodal involvement 6 of 35 removed were positive. Got psa recurrence post surgery. Consulted Dr Eugene Kwon mayo rochester I found his team to be thorough and skillful with scans and very personable. Your disease does not suggest a single therapy solution. You might want to seek a consult from them

Yes , they are also a consideration, I guess I left them off my list since they are such an obvious choice , lol.

I had surgery at Banner Hospital in Phoenix. Private physician. Probably not the best choice. Mayo phx at the time did not take medicare. They take original medicare now but do not accept an advantage plan. I have switched my urology care to Mayo. I can highly recommend Mayo.

Thanks. Mayo is on back burner for me now. Other reply was right about them not accepting Medicare Advantage plans, they said I could have my Dr. send them a referral and they could submit to administration to see if they could make an exception. I could switch to regular Medicare but would have to wait til Jan. 1st for it to kick in. In process of Trying to get an appointment with Stanford Medicine Cancer Center. UCLA will accept my plan per my phone conversation with my Insurance rep. MD Anderson is out.
