After 6 months off the big3, using symbicort only, a cough came back. Restarted the big 3 and later hemoptysis reoccurring and 2 somewhat big 3 day events. Stopped the Symbicort (steroid) and things improved. While Mac tests were negative, aspergillus was detected and confirmed with a super dimension bronchosopy. Started voriconazole and met with a surgeon. Still on voriconazole, no surgery yet. I have a fair sized cavity and debris is forming a fungal ball. Earlier resection surgery was not successful due to the scar tissue that had formed in and around the cavity so I don't have too much confidence in a second surgery.

Rick-
Thank you for your post and all the posts I have read that you have written. Helps us all in many ways, posting on this Mayo site.
I can't even imagine what those "2 somewhat big 3 day events' were like....yet I sure know it wasn't fun times and moments of wanting to SCREAM, I would imagine.
As I write this I am constantly needing to clear mucus and I have brought up mucus plugs while doing so. A never ending thing, battle, for us.
I just looked up how do you get aspergillus.....and was taken back...it also listed what we would expect it to say:
Soil, compost, and rotting leaves
Plants, trees, and crops
Dust
Bedding
Damp buildings
Air conditioning systems
Starch-rich items like potatoes or bread
Inside walls, especially after flooding or water damage
BUT this was a surprise.... "starch rich items such as potatoes and bread." WOW.
You, for sure, have and have had much to deal with....as so many have who have been diagnosed for a bit of time with BE and infections.
I have just recently entered my second year of having been diagnosed with BE and MAI. I know I am probably right behind many of those with similar stories as those I have read. At this point in time all that tests are able to show and showing is MAI.
Not looking forward to the drugs but need to find out if they will do the trick, for me, of removing the infection, this time. I hope I can find my way to do all I need to do, can do, to keep clear of all we know can come about because of our lung condition.
Thanks, Rick.......Hope this was a good day for you.
