Shingrix and peripheral neuropathy
4 days after my 2nd Shingrix vaccination, I suddenly developed intense peripheral neuropathy in both feet...for the first time in my life...anyone else?

Hi, @patebner, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.
What type of neuropathy symptoms are you experiencing? Has your doctor weighed in on whether the neuropathy is connected to the vaccine you received or any other factors?
Moderate numbness in my feet and slight numbness in my hands. Occasional sharp pain in my feet, especially after walking a mile or more. The symptoms have slowly gotten worse over time.
I got two doses of Shingrix at Walmart. I need to confirm the date with them. Then I had tests done at the department of neurology on 8-18-2023 that confirmed the neuropathy.
Hmmm—-I don’t know if Shingrix has any of the shingles components —some vaccines used to use that type of method in order for your body to produce antibodies to the disease. If that is the case, I’d ask your dr if it is possible you have/had a mild “attack” on the nerves where the varicella virus sits (if you had chicken pox as a kid, it left the virus in a dormant state waiting to reappear as Shingles. Kind of like getting a “mild case” so your immune system could recognize the virus & attack it before the virus became full blown Shingles. I hope that your symptoms go away.
I got peripheral neuropathy in feet after I had Shingles and PN in my hands after Shingrix. I had to wear gloves to put/ take things out of the frig and freezer, could not type for mos. Acute phase of PN in hands lasted about 4 -5 mos. Occasionally still get an intense pain in my left thumb early in the morning that only lasts 5 minutes. My hands are still sensitive to cold. Neurologist confirmed polyneuropathy.

I had the Shingrix vaccination last May 2024. Immediately started getting tingling in both legs. Occasionally now get tinging in the hands and very occasionally on the head. It is now January 2025 and the neauropathy has not diminished. Never again!
Wow I am so sorry about this. There are facebook groups where people make suggestions about what they are using for the pain
Hello @barbaraj008 and @barnettann, Welcome to Connect. @barbaraj008 I am sorry to hear you had an adverse reaction to the Shingrix vaccine. I already had neuropathy and fortunately I didn't have any adverse side effects from the vaccine and it didn't make my symptoms worse other than a sore arm and some fatigue for a day or so. Here's a reference on the topic that might be helpful:
-- Serious and Progressive Neuropathy Presumably Post-Shingrix Vaccination:

The article mentions that you should report adverse side effects of the vaccine to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System - https://vaers.hhs.gov/. If you haven't already reported your side effects, I think it would be good to do. If you are looking to learn more about neuropathy and possible treatments, the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has a lot of good information - https://www.foundationforpn.org/.
Hi Boris,
I am so upset to hear about what the shingles shot gave you peripheral neuropathy & erythromelalgia! I was seriously going to get the 2 shingles shots but now??? Unfortunately, I can truly relate to what you have got now from the 1st shot, as I have both peripheral neuropathy & erythomelalgia from no shots! Now I'm even more up in the air about getting shingles shots or not, obviously already got the nasty diseases. It took years to finally get diagnosed as most doctors had no idea what rare disease, I have! Hope to hear from you!
Thank you,
Maxine
