Posted by joannerhodes @joannerhodes, Feb 1, 2019

4 days after my 2nd Shingrix vaccination, I suddenly developed intense peripheral neuropathy in both feet...for the first time in my life...anyone else?

@patebner

I developed neuropathy soon after getting vaccinated, but I never had it before.

Hi, @patebner, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

What type of neuropathy symptoms are you experiencing? Has your doctor weighed in on whether the neuropathy is connected to the vaccine you received or any other factors?

Moderate numbness in my feet and slight numbness in my hands. Occasional sharp pain in my feet, especially after walking a mile or more. The symptoms have slowly gotten worse over time.

I got two doses of Shingrix at Walmart. I need to confirm the date with them. Then I had tests done at the department of neurology on 8-18-2023 that confirmed the neuropathy.

Hmmm—-I don’t know if Shingrix has any of the shingles components —some vaccines used to use that type of method in order for your body to produce antibodies to the disease. If that is the case, I’d ask your dr if it is possible you have/had a mild “attack” on the nerves where the varicella virus sits (if you had chicken pox as a kid, it left the virus in a dormant state waiting to reappear as Shingles. Kind of like getting a “mild case” so your immune system could recognize the virus & attack it before the virus became full blown Shingles. I hope that your symptoms go away.

I got peripheral neuropathy in feet after I had Shingles and PN in my hands after Shingrix. I had to wear gloves to put/ take things out of the frig and freezer, could not type for mos. Acute phase of PN in hands lasted about 4 -5 mos. Occasionally still get an intense pain in my left thumb early in the morning that only lasts 5 minutes. My hands are still sensitive to cold. Neurologist confirmed polyneuropathy.

I had the Shingrix vaccination last May 2024. Immediately started getting tingling in both legs. Occasionally now get tinging in the hands and very occasionally on the head. It is now January 2025 and the neauropathy has not diminished. Never again!

I have been looking for this ...information for years....little history, I had a bout of shingles when I was 48 years old, several spots on the side of my neck, didn't know what it was, but I found that antibiotic cream did nothing to heal it....after 3 weeks of severe pain, I finally went to a doctor. She prescribed some pills, told me to take them until gone and come back when all symptoms were gone....I did that and she gave me the first shingles shot.....everything seems fine......fast forward into my 60's...was told to get the NEW shingles shot, shingrix....I got the first shot and was told to return after 6 months, which I did.....less than two weeks after the second shot, in bed one night, I was awakened by, what felt like someone stabbing me in my feet with a 5 inch needle....soon after my feet were on fire, they burn constantly and still have the "stabbing" symptoms at night....I am at present 69 years old, it has been about 4 or 5 years since I had that second shot, my feet, still to this day, hurt so bad that I can barely walk at times.....I am sure the second shot caused all of this but doctors have no clue how to treat it, one doctor prescribed a drug, gabapentin, that made me sick as hell with horrible side affects......since then I have just given up on treatment and am just living with it best I can......If anyone has anything that might treat this condition I would be very greatful....thank you

Wow I am so sorry about this. There are facebook groups where people make suggestions about what they are using for the pain

Hello @barbaraj008 and @barnettann, Welcome to Connect. @barbaraj008 I am sorry to hear you had an adverse reaction to the Shingrix vaccine. I already had neuropathy and fortunately I didn't have any adverse side effects from the vaccine and it didn't make my symptoms worse other than a sore arm and some fatigue for a day or so. Here's a reference on the topic that might be helpful:
-- Serious and Progressive Neuropathy Presumably Post-Shingrix Vaccination:
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/377423244_Serious_and_Progressive_Neuropathy_Presumably_Post-Shingrix_Vaccination
The article mentions that you should report adverse side effects of the vaccine to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System - https://vaers.hhs.gov/. If you haven't already reported your side effects, I think it would be good to do. If you are looking to learn more about neuropathy and possible treatments, the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has a lot of good information - https://www.foundationforpn.org/.

The shingles vaccine ruined my life. I was 100% healthy before receiving the shingles vaccine in 2014, but within two weeks developed rather severe neuropathy in both feet. My toes were completely numb and I had difficulty walking. In addition, the vaccine also caused a relatively rare condition known as erythromelalgia, which causes the feet to turn bright red and burn terribly.

Doctors were baffled by the sudden onset of two semi-debilitating conditions concurrently, until a brilliant podiatrist I saw diagnosed my conditions as being a reaction to the shingles vaccine I had received. He had experience with other patients who had the very same conditions and, like me, had received the shingles vaccine within a short time before the conditions manifested. He put me on gabapentin (1200 mg per day), which I still take to this day. It helps lessen the pain and burning, but does not cure or even come close to curing either condition. I refuse to take any opioids or other addictive painkillers.

It is now 2022 and I still suffer from peripheral neuropathy and erythromelalgia. I have "learned to live with it" but am no longer the very athletic, very fit person I was before the onset of these terrible conditions. I can no longer run, use a treadmill, do heavy weight-lifting, go mountain biking or hiking, play basketball or flag football, or enjoy any of the other strenuous or semi-strenuous activities I used to do on a regular basis. Now I must live a sedentary lifestyle and can be on my feet for no more than 20 minutes, max. My feet hurt and/or burn 75% of the time. Fortunately, immersing my feet in a pan of very cold water stops the burning, which I need to do several times a day. I can no longer wear socks of any kind, and can wear only extra-wide Crocs with a huge toebox. And no, I do NOT have diabetes; in fact, I'm not even close to being PRE-diabetic!

As a result of my life-altering negative experience with the shingles vaccine, I decided to forgo getting ANY type of vaccine, period. I have received NO vaccine of ANY type since 2014 and have not contracted a single virus, to include influenza, COVID-19, or even the common cold. (It no doubt helps that I take 20 immune system-enhancing supplements every day.) My only health issues are with my feet, thanks to the (expletive deleted) shingles vaccine. If you have not received the shingles vaccine and are undecided on whether to get it, my advice is to skip it. Why take a chance on experiencing the nasty, long-term side effects of the vaccine, as I have? Trust me, it's infinitely better to endure a single bout of shingles than a lifetime of pain and misery caused by neuropathy and erythromelalgia.

Hi Boris,
I am so upset to hear about what the shingles shot gave you peripheral neuropathy & erythromelalgia! I was seriously going to get the 2 shingles shots but now??? Unfortunately, I can truly relate to what you have got now from the 1st shot, as I have both peripheral neuropathy & erythomelalgia from no shots! Now I'm even more up in the air about getting shingles shots or not, obviously already got the nasty diseases. It took years to finally get diagnosed as most doctors had no idea what rare disease, I have! Hope to hear from you!
Thank you,
Maxine
