Endocrinology question ; need help; Dr won’t give referral

Posted by marmymoomy @marmymoomy, Aug 22, 2024

My Sr won’t refer me to Endocrinology (I don’t have diabetes, but this was the only group with the topic of endocrine system. ). I know there are more extensive tests an endocrinologist can do to check my thyroid, cortisol levels and adrenal system. Since Aug 1, I have had the feeling of being incredibly dehydrated ( but I’m not) with a scalloped tongue, and moments of severe exhaustion… have moments where I feel I cannot function physically, or mentally nor verbally. ( I do have fibromyalgia and other issues as well). My skin and eyes for maybe ten years are dry dry dry. I have gained weight around my mid section ( apron belly) and I’ve not changed my eating habits at all. I am going for a cortisol “ test” , but at this point, my Dr is holding off on a referral, but I truly feel I need more extensive testing of my thyroid and whole adrenal system.

@gravity3

Do you need a Dr. referral or can you self refer and get it covered by your insurance?

Thank you @gretchenmpls ! My cortisol levels did come back high ; I have other symptoms that lead me to believe I have a thyroid issue or adrenal issue… too much to go into here. Many symptoms I’ve experienced for a few years… many fall in line with my fibromyalgia, others could cross over into other diagnosis. I’ve had to “ fight” for having tests and certain specialists see me for about 16 years now… first medical issue being pelvic congestion syndrome ( but I didn’t know what it was at that time, just knew I was in severe pain, and could not stand for more than ten minutes…. Also other vascular issues, varicose veins requiring numerous surgeries, and sporting compression hose beginning at the age of 31 ) Also had to argue with my PCP four years ago about the many symptoms I have, and how I was quite sure it’s fibromyalgia ( judging from the symptoms of my Mom, two sisters, three of my aunts, and two sisters in law). Yes, we’re not Doctors, we’re the patients, but we know our bodies best, and we definitely know when something is way off.

Well said and I agree with all you said.It should not be this difficult.Also another “ down side” to ongoing pain etc. is you start to feel like not even your nearest and dearest believe you anymore.As regards G.P.s not willing to give a script for Armour etc.a friend (naturopath) said to me not be too hard on G.P.s because we must remember ,more than likely ,the Pharma. co.problem support the medical schools.I’m sure there is an answer out there some where .Stay well.

ok. what with all you're saying it sounds pretty much textbook for Hypothyroidism and Adrenal glands. but talking about getting the TH 3 and TH 4 as a medicine from a compound pharmacy i'm confused. either my PCP or Endo does lab work for my TH 3 OR TH 4 which tells them how my Thyroid is doing. along with the Adrenal glands. please explain.

@matt2024 thank you so much! I have the name of an Endo whom a family member goes to, and highly recommends . This family member also said she suspects a thyroid issue. My TSH levels I guess to my Dr looked fine, but I know I need to seek further testing. She is a new PCP for me , so she doesn’t really know me ( my former PCP of 28 years is now retired ) Thank you SO very much for your two cents 😂

Hello. Sorry for your pain but I can relate as for over four years now I have every hypo. Symptom in the book and more.My GP keeps telling me my TSH is perfect and I have been to an Endo.who told me rhe same thing.If you are not on Levothyroxine or similar already I would question it as I believe it is a big problem for a lot of people.I am in the process of cleaning out my body of this poison and when clear will test again and if still Hypo.will source some DTE( like Armour).Let’s face it DTE worked for over 100 years with no problems but I guess Big Pharma was missing out.Stay well

@marmymoomy, a question. do you have PPO insurance? if you do. you don't need a referral. the things you describe sounds like Hypothyroidism. especially with the weight gain around the midsection. dry eyes. dehydration, scalloped tongue, extreme fatigue. another thing. how could she ask you, what do you mean scalloped tongue? all she has to do is look at it. it's obvious. geez what a doctor. one more thing. if you have PPO insurance find another doctor while you're at it. even if you don't have PPO ins. @danny5

Hang in there and take charge of your own health.For 5 years I was told my TSH tests were “ spot on” even though I had very hypo.symptom in the book.You need to insist to be treated as per your symptoms and and not test results ( which is what they do ) I am now “ weaning” myself” off Levothyroxine and when done( once you stop it takes 4/6 weeks to clear your system) will have a TSH test and if still Hypo. will seek some DTE .I asked my GP if he would give me a script for same but he refused saying it’s not good.Strange ,it’s been used for over 100 years with great success .P.S if anyone has a suggestion how to obtain a script I would be grateful.Stay well.

I mostly hang out in the Diabetes & Endocrinology group. There is a connection between the 2 topics BUT there is so much more to Endocrinology than Diabetes. It might be worth separating into two separate groups?

Another idea that some of you might find worthy of exploring is to checkout the Autoimmune group. Endocrinology issues and autoimmune conditions often go together.

I feel our pain and understand but I would not put much faith in Endos. having paid and experienced them.It does seem like Hypothyroidism symptoms and the best thing to do is have a basic TSH test and take it from there

I often ask myself what happened to a Doctors oath “ to do no harm”😶‍🌫️
