Reconstruction: Looking for recommendations for a surgeon at Mayo

Posted by kbeegee @kbeegee, Oct 24 7:01am

I am five years post bilateral mastectomy. I have had nine reconstruction surgeries. I am looking for everyone’s best recommendations for a surgeon who specializes within Mayo.

Welcome to Mayo Connect. Nine reconstruction surgeries, WOW !

Were there problems with the previous reconstruction surgeries, is that why you are considering Mayo?

Which one of the Mayo locations are you considering, MN, AZ or FL ?

I am originally from Long Island. I used a highly recommended surgeon for six surgeries and was not happy with the outcome. I switched to another surgeon who definitely gave me a much better result, but I feel that I’m still having issues. I’m not sure if it’s just par for the course with reconstruction and if I need to just settle at this point. But I live in Florida now and I would love to consult with someone and get another opinion

I'm also looking for recommendations for breast surgeon + plastic surgeon for recon at the Mayo FL. I'd like to go to someone who is experienced and does most if not all of the surgery themselves rather than having residents/fellows doing most of it.

Yes. And also, being a breast surgeon isn’t enough. They really need to specialize in reconstruction because it’s not a linear process. I’ve been through so much already and I want someone who is the best and who has done tons of this type of surgery.

@kbeegee and @lilacs777

I happen to listen in on a webinar this week on Breast Cancer from Mayo Clinic FA. They discussed their integrated / team approach. Similar to all Mayo Breast Clinics, the team approaches includes nurses, social workers, medical oncologist, surgeons, radiologist, radiation oncologist, plastic surgeons, pathologist, survivorship specialist, research and maybe few more I am forgetting about.

You can read more about Breast Cancer Surgery Program at Mayo Fl here:

There is contact information at bottom of page:
Mayo Clinic Breast Surgery Program in Jacksonville

And link to request appointments:

In regard to lilacs777 question about residents and fellows, they are part of most surgical teams, but you can always request to see a consultant and discuss with them about who will actually perform surgery.

I would suggest you contact Mayo directly and discuss your specific needs. The appointment coordinators are trained to determine which provider would be best fit for the type of care and/or surgery you are requesting.

I am doing research on the Plastics Team at Mayo as well for an upcoming surgery. I was originally told a lumpectomy with implant replacement but after meeting with the plastics team, I was told I should have a mascetomy instead due to the amount of tissue that would need to be removed. That was a huge shock.

I had implants put in 20+ years ago and I was very satisified with the outcome, but had time to research the doctor that would be doing the surgery. I was also able to see before and after photos of what to expect. I am very concerned about the possible outcome without being able to see the surgeon's past work at Mayo, their specialty isn't based on the anatomy that is due to be reconstructed, and when the surgeon isn't registred with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (which I only found one listed at Mayo FL).

I'd be interested in any feedback in relation to previous patient's outcome at Mayo FL.

Maybe look outside Mayo? There is that group in Louisiana that seems to specialize in repairing other surgeons mistakes.
