Newly diagnosed with prostate cancer: What might I be in for?

I am newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. My biopsy results are: Gleason 7 4+3 lesion, Gleason 7 3+4 lesion, and 3 Gleason 6 3+3 lesions. There are also abnormal cells near the edge of the prostate. I have not had my biopsy consult yet, and no discussion of treatment options yet. What might I be in for going forward?

I live in Nigeria, I was Gleason 4+3, i was counselled for radical prostatectomy. i did the surgery and Doctors say everything is fine. I did a PSA test seven weeks after surgery, my psa is reading 0.56. Doctors say that is fine, but i am confused and worried with sleepless nights.

No, that’s too high after surgery. Did the surgical pathology show any lymphatic activity, positive margins, etc? Did you have a PET scan pre-surgery?
Don’t know the protocols followed in Nigeria, but .56 is definitely a red flag. Get a GOOD second opinion!

@mspotter1956, just checking in. Have you had your consult with the cancer team and discussed treatment options? How is the decision-making going?

When you get your consultation they will go over treatment options with you. In today's world there are a lot of options for you. Try to research the treatments options and have questions ready when you have your consultation.

In addition I suggest you asked for the Decipher test. It will help defined the aggressiveness of your cancer. I was originally disngozed by biopsies as intermediate risk but Decipher showed low risk. It will have impact on what your urolgoist and/or R/O will discuss as options.

There are other tests you should also consider and talk to your urologist about. PSMA to see if cancer has spread outside the prostate and bone scan. I am not sure about bone scan if you have a PSMA test as not a medical professional so important to asked yours.

If your Gleason score remains same and Decipher tests comes back confirming the aggressiveness of your cancer you are going to get a lot of options. One big thing is to asked questions about new treatments, and the pros and cons of every treatment offered to you.

Finally, I and many others would suggest getting a second opinion. Many outstanding medical institutions offer them and can use your medical records sent to them and not have to go through additional testing.
