Cost of Evenity injections
Does anyone know what is the out of pocket cost for Evenity if one has traditional Medicare with a supplement vs Medicare advantage program?
I was told by Aetna Medicare Advantage CONY the the out of pocket cost is $602.89
for each injection visit. They said Evenity is a tier V medication. I heard Medicare part B covers 80% and Medigap or supplement covers 20%. However I think the out of pocket cost for every Evenity visit would be costly.. appreciate a reply and thanks. Shula

I don’t know how to get someone from medicare on the phone who can address this specific issue. The infusion center put me in contact with a drug rep who said as long as it’s no more than six weeks between shots I am considered to be in treatment. Sure hope he’s right
It is an eye popping price. I have injections at an infusion center that is close to home. I imagine a doctor’s office would bill less.
@marymj7 There is a phone number on the back of your Medicare card. On my card the phone number if 1-800-633-4227. Do you get your Medicare through an insurance company such as United or Humana? If yes, then you have a Medicare Advantage policy and you have to call that company. Again, the phone number if on the back of your insurance card.
I'll admit that Medicare representatives are not always helpful. Just like any private insurance company such as United or Blue Cross/Blue Shield Medicare is the funding source for your Evenity injections. Medicare "decides" what to pay and not pay. The drug representative can tell you what is recommended but they do not make the decision on payment.
@naturegirl5 Thanks. I was able to get in with the dentist much sooner-next Tuesday. So now I’m only delaying the shots by 4 days so I should be ok.
I would recommend calling Medicare. Also be sure you have Medicare Part B and not Medicare Advantage. And remember that if Medicare covers it under Part B, you will still have to pay the annual deductible and Medicare [original] only pays 80%. You'll want to find out what your Medigap insurance will pay.
Your best bet is to get the procedure code and then call Medicare. If you have set up your on line Medicare account, you can also chat with them there. But you'll still want to have the procedure code in hand.
I read that Medicare only covers Evenity if you've already had a fracture. Do you know if they make exceptions to this? I have a Blue Cross Medicare Advantage plan, so maybe I need to call them. Thanks.
I have a Medicare Advantage Plan too but I have fractures. I would call your plan. If your DEXA scores are below a certain level you might get coverage. In any case your doctor can write a letter of medical necessity or do an authorization or whatever. Let us know!
@daisy17 Traditional Medicare certainly does not require fractures before it will pay for Evenity.
I have no experience with medicate advantage plans but I would guess that it would be up to each plan whether the cover and the details of that coverage.
Since it's Medicare open season, it would be a good time to review your Medigap coverage.
