berberine for neuropathy?

Has anyone taken berberine for neuropathy. I have a lot of symptoms
shared by you all and also tried many ways to relieve my severe neuropathy in my legs and feet. My Dr. says it is from spinal stenosis and lower back surgery I had in the late 1990s. Hugs to all you soldiers. We will overcome.

Hello @newyorknill, I have not taken berberine for neuropathy but I do take a lot of other supplements. I have idiopathic small fiber peripheral neuropathy with only numbness and some tingling but no pain. I posted my neuropathy story in another discussion here - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/310341/.

There are quite a few discussions and comments about berberine but I didn't see any others except this one in the neuropathy group. It might be helpful to scan through the comments and discussions to read what others have shared. Here's a link to that lists the discussions and comments on berberine - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/discussions/?search=berberine.

Not sure if you have seen this research on your question but thought I would share it with you.
"Does berberine help with neuropathy?
Diabetic neuropathy (DN) causes sensory dysfunction, such as numbness, tingling, or burning sensations. Traditional medication may not ease pain and discomfort, but natural remedies such as Berberine (BR) and vitamin E or Tocopherol (TOC) have therapeutic potential to reduce inflammation while improving nerve function."

Hello. I take berberine 500 mg 2x per day to help lower my blood glucose. It helps me with that but does not do a thing for my neuropathy pain and I have taken it for several weeks.

Berberine didn't help me, the only thing that has helped me has been alpha lipoic acid and actually less works better. I only take 100 mg a day and a super b complex three times a week, and choline with inositol three times a week. I'm hypoglycemic AKA low blood sugar and berberine got me too shaky and faint, but it might be helpful for people that have high blood sugar and want to keep it from damaging their nerves which in turn will help with neuropathy.

thanks for your wisdom. I just started taking 600mg of alpha lipoic acid 1x a day. b complex 1x a day, b12 2000mcg 1x a day and a zillion other herbs. lol. I'm 82 and am trying to keep everything ticking. I am prediabetic so maybe a little berberine can't hurt to add. my a1c ranges from 5.7 - 6.4. Again, thank you so much. You have really helped.
