Anybody done the injections?

Posted by rodturner @rodturner, Oct 13 7:08pm

Physical therapy and topical creams don't seem to be working for me, so it looks like I will be taking the injections. The doctor says it will be four injections, done under anesthesia. I absolutely dread being put under. Has anyone had to undergo this? What can I expect for relief?

I appreciate all the feedback. I suppose I will have some decisions to make at some point. Cronic pain is a tough thing to live with.

His exact words were "injections" and "put you under". I don't know exactly what he meant. I've got some time till this would be done, so I need to get an exact definition. It just worries me...

You say that you "should have had a fusion" years ago but were too busy teaching. Was the fusion on the advice of your pain doc. orthopedic surgeon? I had a fusion at L5-S1 about seven years ago. Since then I have learned(from others on this site and articles) that fusions will not likely help with pain(as was the case with me). It will only help to stabilize your spine. Was an MRI done? I highly recommend getting a second, even third opinion.

When dealing with ANY spine issues, I believe that Second (and perhaps) Third Opinions may be very helpful in decision-making.

What type of injection? Nerve root injection? Epidural? As far as I am aware, they use a local anesthetic, not a general anesthesia. It sounds like to me you need to have a further discussion about the exact procedure the doctor is talking about.

I have had all kind of shots and blocks in my back. I have probably 20 shots or injections since 1993 and I have never got any relief. I have heard of people that have got great relief. I have Arachnoiditis and they do not help me at all. I have even heard stories of people getting Arachnoiditis from injections. I say do your homework and make sure what your doctor is using. If I can make it without ever getting another shot or block I will not let them ever stick a needle in my back again but my situation is different than most. I have discovered that a diet with high amounts of sugar feed inflammation so I have changed my diet and it helps.

I had 3 different series of shots in my back --without anesthesia--don't do that! That was terrible.
I had sciatic pain down my leg for two years and finally had back surgery. That took care of the sciatic pain, but still have lower back arthritis pain. Would love help for that.

I've had 4, maybe 5 separate shot procedures. Not one iota of pain relief.
Nothing has helped, I must literally crawl out of bed in the morning. Doctors have no ideas for relief.

Have had 15 injections in my back. Each a different spot. Hasn’t helped.
