This exam could be 30 to 60 min. They will give you Valium iv which will make the procedure only feeling some pressure, not any pain. It's best to be lucid do you can ask questions and watch to learn. It's really cool

It was found by my OBGYN, at first it was a cyst on the vaginal side and they doctored that. Then it came back and she sent me to a surgeon. I also saw a surgeon to remove hemorrhoids and they decided to do all of this during the same surgery. When we went in the surgery, they did a biopsy and found it to be Anal Squamous cell cancer. Now I have a port in and waiting for appointments for chemo and radiation. I was hoping someone who had been through this would give me some ideas as what to expect.

Clare, you're in good hands at Mayo Clinic. Which location are you receiving treatment at? What treatment(s) are you having?

Hi, Clare! I finished chemo radiation three months ago for anal cancer. HPV, squamous cell. Two tumors, 5 and 3 cm. I had a PET scan a couple of weeks ago. (They like to wait 2-3 months after treatment to be sure all the “stuff” is out of your system before the scan.)
I have an appt next week with my oncologist but my reading of the results is that there’s no evidence of cancer now, even in the one lymph node to which it had spread. Wahoo!

I had a port infusion on Day 1 of Mitomycin. Then followed 28 days of a chemo pill twice a day (capecitabine) and also radiation.

The side effects: No pain, no nausea. However, pretty bad diarrhea from the radiation (pull-ups required!) but that has now 99% improved. I also had extreme weakness and tiredness from the chemo and it’s still an issue. I’m ready for a break after a brief stint of housework. Maybe that’s just an excuse!

If you have any questions, I’ll be glad to share. By the way, I’m almost 84.

I finally had the colonoscopy last week. It was rescheduled from last spring. I decided to get the sedation and it turned out fine. I have viewed the photos of my colon found in my chart in the portal. It was normal, though I’m waiting for biopsy results. I’m grateful for the news.

But only for about three months can't say it's very painful but more noticed at night time
