Well I think it would depend on your overall health. Like no heart problems

Hello @marst. How are you doing while you weigh this big decision? If you are comfortable sharing, what has your orthopedist or surgeon said about your potential risk factors for this surgery? It would seem that DVTs and a pulmonary embolism would rank high on the risk factor charts for a demanding surgery such as a knee replacement.

Agree that TKR is demanding, especially for the patient. I'm 3 months out, did PT for a month b4 surgery to help post-op, & it's still challenging. I also developed IT Band syndrome which is painful all the time & apparently common. At age 92, unless you're in really good shape, surgery would be very challenging.

Having had 4 joint replacement surgeries, I know the pain can be awful and ruin your life. Knees are the worst.
I have had bilateral sequential TKR surgeries; one left hip; one left shoulder.
I hesitated for years before doing these surgeries - a big big mistake.
I don’t know why you have had so many DVTs and a PE.
My suggestion would be to understand the factors that led to the DVTs and the PE and do whatever is necessary to prevent any in the future. You may need to see a subspecialist doctor for this.
Be very careful in selecting a knee doctor. There are some major centers that have more experience with performing knee and hip surgeries in people like us that are in their eighties and nineties. I am 81 and have had no problems whatsoever except an irritated psoas muscle with the first TKR. That was painful but otherwise my joints feel totally natural. I did no PT with any of them. I walked and walked and walked - as instructed.

@marst What do your primary doc and the orthopedic surgeon say about whether you are a candidate for surgery and rehab?
