Artificial Urinary Sphincter surgery: Only after 6 months

Posted by kruznkru @kruznkru, Oct 13 10:49am

Hello all
First post all
July 8th I had RP surgery at University of Chicago hospital.
As weeks/months go bye and NO improvement in leakage I’m starting to look into options if it doesn’t slow down.
I had a meeting with specialist at U of C this week and he said I’m doing everything right Kegals/PT and even started acupuncture.
He also said he WILL NOT do the artificial urinary sphincter AUS before 6 months.
I have the common symptoms depressed/not wanting to go out/lost some weight from worrying.
If my leakage does not improve by 6 months (not slowing down at all)
has anyone heard of doing the AUS at 6+ months ?
Thanks for any help

Never heard of anybody doing it so soon. I’m sure the doctor thinks your incontinence will become better and you won’t need it. I know one person who has one and he is very happy with it.

I have a meeting with urologist again Dec 17th.
At that point it’ll be 5 1/2 months so decision time
unless I go somewhere else.
Mayo Rochester or Cleveland clinic who may not do
it that soon
Thanks for responding

Took me a year after surgery before I was continent. You're expecting too much too soon. It's only been 3 months!

I’m usually an impatient person anyway but kinda frustrated that after 3 months I’m not seeing any improvement ?
The clamp gets me bye for an hour or so before it starts hurting so I’m usually just around the house.
Have Dr appt Dec 17th to discuss

I wear a condom catheter. I can sleep without it. I can do about anything I could before. I just need to wear long pants. I am ready for better solution but my surgery was 5 years ago. This might give you some time to see if things improve. I will caution that wearing it makes you not work on trying to hold it.

Hi Tuckerp
I was thinking about cc to get around more. Clamp just to uncomfortable
Question:
Which cc do you use ? Hollister, Coloplast, other
How do you use a leg bag? Thigh, ankle, etc and does it slide down ?
Thanks for any help !

Are you using a Wiesner clamp? It comes with 3 different sizes and is comfortable to use. The clamp is only recommended to be worn for 2 hours, then you need to reposition it, like all clamps.

Amazon sells them.

Not that I recommend you get started on CC but I originally thought while I was in transition it would help. I just never transitioned out. I went to Mayo last summer and had all the testing. No apparent issues other than an over active bladder. I have 3 of the weisner clamps. They work ok but they do get a little painful. I use the 28mm freedom clear advantage coloplast 6200. Coloplast has a cheaper version that doesnt stick. That could be a little smaller for me but their next size is a 23mm. Thats to small. Your penis needs to be dry or the adhesive will not stick. I have worn mine so long that I dont have any pigment left. Its painful to take off if it over sticks. I put just a little dab of bag balm just on the circumcision scar at the base of the mushroom. That area wants to stick tight. Roll it down and get all the air out of it. I buy in qtys of 100. My leg bag is AMSURE AS308N. Its a 600ml(16oz) bag. I strap the top part just below the knee cap in the grove. Then I pull my sock up and strap the bottom about 3in above my ankle around the sock. The bottom one I pull the strap tight enough to double wrap. Then I connect the tube to the condom. You may have to cut off some length. To long and it catches as you bend your knee and too short it will pull off your penis. I use another strap above the knee and wrap around the tube to keep it in place. Best if you shave. If the tube pulls on your penis enough the condom will pull down with the skin and come off. I thought about going to a 25mm hollister 97525. I tried them and they seem to work. This would give a little tighter fit. I wear the condom all day until bedtime and replace each day. My bag will go a couple of weeks. I use hydrogen peroxide to flush and store. Alcohol will yellow the bag. You might need an assortment of tubes and adapters. I get up put on the bag and go to gym , work, treadmill, really no restrictions. Try to keep the bag emptied for less weight. I use my right leg more so I put the bag on the left. I hang left anyway. You want the tube to hang without kinks in the condom. Instructions say to tape it to your thigh. Any kinks and the pressure pushes back up the condom and it comes off. This is not ideal. I am just not convinced yet an AUS is either.

Have you ever used leg bag on your tight ?
I see there are pants and underwear (cathwear) that you
put bag in inside pockets ?
