Small instestines bacteria overgrowth

Posted by emstorm @emstorm, Oct 1 12:31pm

I am being referred to UCLA for nutritional support. I saw that SIBO was one of the things on my list of problems. I have never heard of this. dr. has never mentioned it but when I looked it up, the description of symptoms are classic to my problems. Anyone have experience with SIBO/small intestines bacteria overgrowth?

I'm not certain, but I believe this can be made worse by eating too much refined sugar. Refined sugar can result in an overgrowth of bad bacteria, and this causes inflammation throughout the body.

Check your diet and check with your Dr. I Hope this helps.

Thank you. I have a lot of diet advice. Much of it conflicts. I truly don't know what to do anymore. I hope UCLA can hellp. It has been 6 days since my referral has been approved an they have not returned my calls for an appointment. Maybe tomorrow.

Yes, battled it for 3 years before I knew what it was. Thru my own research, I figured it out and found a GI Dr that had some experience treating it. I did the Tri-Smart breath test and it was came back positive for Hydrogen and some methane gases. I took the Xifaxan for 2 weeks. Ate as normal of a diet as I could - to wake up all the bad stuff, haha. About 4 days into the meds, I started experiencing die off of the bad bacteria, which is normal. About 1 week after I finished the meds, I was good! And very surprised I no longer had the constant bloat and painful gut. But as my Dr suspected, the methane gases have returned, but not as bad as before. I can deal with the burping and gas. Dr Mark Pimentel at Cedars Sinai is the best expert I know of. Check out his books - very solid guidance. For many folks, the meds don't help. It's a very complicated issue. I do know that many say it boils to your intestinal motility.

Thanks for sharing! I also have IBS and I just read all of Dr. Pimentel’s blogs. I’m going to look into seeing him. Were the symptoms of the die off of bacteria awful? Flu-like?
Thanks

Hi,
I had SIBO up until 8 weeks ago. Underwent a 4 week treatment and got rid of it but am now struggling to fend it off again. I have IBS C+D and autonomic polyneuropathy which is destroying my digestive system. Because I'm only able to eat and digest a very small amount of food per day my strength has become almost none existant and certainly no stamina, struggling to walk much. Any attempt to eat more results in yet another bout of SIBO. One of the foods I was told not to eat was cabbage, it certainly makes a difference to me. Sadly I like my cabbage and now am limited to bland foods to try and keep SIBO in check. All ready have a course of medication waiting if I can't shake it off. With my digestive problems it will continue to happen regularly until malnutrition gets me.
Cheers

Hi,
I had to undergo a 5/6 hour breath analyser test to determine what gases were being produced, an administered syrup was given during to see the reaction. All on an empty stomach after 6 hours of no food and only water up to 2 hours before.
Subsequently was given the choice of a funded prescription course of drugs or a top quality $1200 a pop course, which included a course of specialist prepared water soluble food. Pretty obvious which I opted for. Left a disgusting taste in the mouth for a week after, teaches me not to be so cheap, for next time.
Cheers

What symptoms did you have that prompted the order for the SIBO test?

Everything I've read about going to Cedar's in LA is that they just give out a prescription for the 2 drug regimen and no instructions or follow up. They were very disappointed especially those that flew there from other locations.
