Symptoms of osteoporosis
Hello
Just wondered what symptoms were experienced before bone density test in general for osteoporosis and if anyone had joint pain in all joints that came suddenly ?
Thank you

@gravity3 can you be specific on which videos you appreciated? I just watched one with Dr. Marc Wein at MGH on Osteoboston and he is big on bisphosphonates first. Says with a straight face that cost is low and insurers like it. He does say that anti-resorptives may affect the effectiveness of anabolics.
Then I tried a different one on the site where a woman who resisted meds and finally went on, was put on Actonel. I stopped there.
I know I felt better starting with anabolics and wanted to avoid the impact of anti-resorptives on anabolics .
I know McCormick has been on Osteoboston. I like the video on YouTube by Dr. Ben Leder, also at MGH, entitled "Combining and Sequential Approaches to Osteoprosis."
I should have been more specific but really got a lot out of the two you mentioned. It has been awhile but I'll review and try to be specific. Thanks
Yes
Last menstruation was feb of last year.
Thank you
79 yrs old, hurt back picking up heavy item.....severe pain, still 10 months later I have
been in PT, (L4 & 5) received Pain relieve shots, epiderma's. A spine Dr. sent me for a bone density test, and it came out low (3.1). My regular Dr said to take Prolia or maybe another drug....never discussed what outcome would be, when a follow up would be....decided after I read different reviews - (I am still in pain still after 10 months, after picking up heavy item) and decided not to bring more pain upon myself. Took up Pilates (never had done it but took private lessons),
stretching, took up slacking, and Yoga, (finally can walk a mile now w/o a cane, lift 5 pound weights every day, stay active all day - no couch sitting...
The same happened with me although it was my PCP who said wait til 65 because I had no fracture history, however my GYN, who I first saw at age 61, ordered a Dexa that showed Osteoporosis. I had no symptoms and lifted weights, walked daily for years. I wasn't vigilant about my Calcium intake, but did take Vitamin D. My mother did have Osteoporosis, but I don't recall her taking meds.
I'm 63 now, after 9 months of Fosamax, switched to Reclast due to acid reflux. Did make gains on the Fosamax, so hopefully will continue with the Reclast.
I had no symptoms. I found out after a routine DEXA when "I came of age". To say i was shocked is putting it mildly
I too have no symptoms of osteoporosis yet I have a -4.0 DEXA score on my lumbar spine. I was recently told that I have no visible compression or fractures either. I eat very well and exercise regularly with a trainer in Pilates and strength training.
Doctors have responded by strongly, encouraging that I take Pharmaceuticals due to my DEXA score. It’s frustrating. I did receive a much lower score on my echo light Rams test from the summer of -2.6. I recently visited Dr. Keith McCormick to learn what lab test would be important for me to take to find out any underlying reasons why I have osteoporosis.
@shexy I believe that those of us past menopause are going to lose bone density, naturally. We are living so much longer! McCormick will suggest a very complex set of factors that contribute to progression or to healing, but he will also say that at a certain point, meds are needed because more natural approaches are not enough. At least that is what I heard from him.
Osteoporosis has no symptoms. That is a real problem because we can feel strong and healthy-until we fracture. For me, my life changed in a matter of seconds when an unwise bending motion fractured three lumbar vertebrae. I was at -3.7 in spine. The pain and disability that result are life-altering and I stay on this forum to share that experience.
I am not especially "pro-medication" for milder cases. But for lower scores, I do hope people take meds. Tymlos got me from -3.7 to -2.5 in 18 months and I handled it by starting at a lower dose and moving up, so my body adjusted.
