Post hip replacement hematoma 2nd opinion
I had a hip replacement 3 weeks ago, and developed a painful hematoma under the incision. The surgery was at another health care system. I'd like to get a 2nd opinion about best treatment at Mayo asap before this hematoma gets any larger or complicated. I am concerned how long it would take me to get this 2nd opinion. Thoughts? Thanks!

Hello @mst123, three weeks is still pretty fresh off of your surgery. Have you had a chance to raise your concern and symptom with the surgeon that operated on you? I understand wanting to obtain a second opinion, but as you mentioned this can take time and your concern may be more acute and urgent that waiting on another appointment.
My wife has gone through 6 hip surgeries! I sensed she had Cobalt poisoning and inquired with her main surgeon about having a test done and he declined; maybe at next years follow up, I took her home and connected with her primary doctor and she ordered the test! Thank God I did; you and mine should be .03 or lower; her level was 17.7; toxic! You need to be a Strong advocate for yourself! Talk to your surgeon and if you don’t feel he or she is listening, see your primary! Not trying to scare you, just be strong in Advocating for yourself! My wife had total bilateral in 2011; revision on right in 2012 due to fracture pelvic, dropped her at rehab and took zero responsibility and doctors covered their asses to avoid a potential law suit, revision on left in 2018 due to chromium and cobalt poison, complete removal of Right implant in 2022 due to two staph infection and chromium/ Cobalt poisoning in her Right hip, after 8 weeks of antibiotics through a port to her heart they placed a new implant. Again, no scare tactic here, just be strong in advocating for yourself!
What an ordeal you two have faced together. I bet she is thankful that you are there for her. We went through the same from 2006 through 2011, ending in 3 revisions and many months of recovery from the Chromium and Cobalt poisoning. I hope her "new hips" prove as durable as mine have - 13 years and counting with only a few bouts of bursitis.
Does she have any long-lasting medical problems from the heavy metal poisoning?
Honestly, due to several transfusion and lack of checking her vitamin D levels; extremely low, just bending over compressed a few disk in her lower back and nerve distortion has limited her mobility, very heavy pain narcotics for 9 months before they did the revision on her Right hip. She now uses a walker to get around some of the time. Currently waiting for her to have an MRI to see if they can find out what is going on. She often speculates issues she experiences are from the Cobalt / Chromium and we have never found a person that hold any real knowledge as to what, if anything these two can cause long term! It’s been a very rough 13 years. Currently, her hip do not pain to much outside where they went into her femur bone.
That most scary part was right after she had her total bilateral…..she was black & blue from head to toe…..jokingly she asked the surgeon if she were dropped on the floor during surgery to acquire all the bruises, especially after observing that her Right side of her pelvis had a fracture and they could not do anything with the right implant until the femoral nerve in her Left leg revived, pending stretched v cut! One would ask, why did she go back to the same surgeon…..SCARED TO DEATH; Almost! Sorry for going on so much. Long story short, we have never found anyone with enough knowledge about the two Cobalt /Chromium; even tried VA orthopedic !
