Back pain while sitting, especially in the car

Posted by nwyatt @nwyatt, Sep 26 7:28am

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2016 but didn't really do anything for it besides upping my calcium and exercising. In 2022 I experienced back pain so my doctor ordered an MRI. I had 3 old compression fractures and one new one so I started on Forteo, My doctor took me off after 8 months because my alkaline phosphotase had risen. I switched to Evenity which gave me increasing back pain so I stopped after 11 injections. Then I tried Fosamax but stopped after 2 doses because of horrible GI issues, which I'm still dealing with. I switched doctors and am back on Forteo. My question has to do with sitting, especially in the car. Does anyone else get a lot of pain while sitting? It's hard for me to sit and I can only sit in the car for 30 minutes before my back tightens up. Putting ice on my back while sitting helps, but I can't always do that. Any tips or helpful hints? My fractures are all in my thoracic spine.

I am the same, due to a bad lower back and surgery that was unsuccessful. Try a small lumbar pillow or car with lumbar helps.

Hang in there.

I am sorry you have pain sitting. It sounds to me like your lower back. Muscles might need some tightening. Maybe some gentle yoga will help. Ask your doctor. My sitting, although my back is really bad. My problem with my sitting was in my hips and I needed my hips replaced. Eventually, my lower lumbar had surgery too. Now, a decade later, my lower back by the sacral joints is giving me pain when I sit too much deep myofascial tissue work called MFR is really helpful. There’s a section on it here.

I recently bought a comfilife seat cushion so I could have one in both vehicles with the cutout on the tailbone it relieves my pressure . Good luck hope you find something comfortable enough.

@nwyatt you didn’t say where your back pain/tightening up is occurring? Car seats can be a challenge for most back pain sufferers. Depends on the type of car and type of seat also. I have a bad lower back and upper back and some of your similar ailments too. I have a Subaru Legacy and the seats fit me to a T and I can drive for hours. My prior Subaru was too small with terrible seats. I did try a bunch of car seats before sticking with Subaru. Good luck with your back cause it doesn’t get easier as we age.
