Post-endoscopy pain
I had an endoscopy 2 days ago that was negative, but the doctor took two biopsies of my esophagus about two-thirds of the way down. Since the procedure, I've had a dull ache at the bottom of my sternum and, when I swallow food or liquids, pain as the food passes through the lower half of my esophagus and, most significantly, right before it empties into the stomach. The pain is similar to what I'd feel if I swallowed, say, a hard crust of bread without properly chewing it. Is this caused by the food or liquid irritating the biopsy sites or is it general soreness from the procedure? I'm somewhat concerned that maybe this is indicative of some kind of damage to the esophageal wall or to the valve or sphincter between my stomach and esophagus. I read that “trouble swallowing” for a day or two is a common side effect, but nothing about pain further down. I was told I could go back immediately to my normal diet, but am now afraid to eat anything but mushy food until this resolves. Anyone have a similar experience? I’d appreciate any insight.

Hi @cudabinacontenda
I know this was a few months ago, but I'm going through the same thing. The doctor took two biopsies and now it hurts when I eat, it's like acid. I had the test today. Please tell me, was it really bad, or did your symptoms go away in a few days?
Hi
I just had an endoscopy as well. My Doctor called me two days after asking if everything was ok, I described the same issue as you cubabinacontenda…
My doc advised that the issue was normal and to switch to softer, easy to swallow foods: eggs, yogurt, meats w sauces, soups, smoothies and to avoid acidic or spicy foods for a few days. Hope this helps and things return to normal soon.
Hi tacam49:
Yes, I returned to normal in a day or two. Yours sounds somewhat worse, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t similarly transitory. All you can really do is talk with your doc about it. I hope you’re feeling somewhat better today.
Thanks for your reply, today I was able to eat without pain. You're right, it's getting better.
I hope you see this but I think I’m going through the same thing, i had a biopsy done on my esophagus after having some food get stuck, I’m 3 days post surgery and even when I drink water it feels like acid when it goes down from 2/3 way down on my esophagus to my stomach and pretty much everything I eat feels like a burning sensation going down. I scheduled another doc appointment but should I be worried?
Hi, @austinconnell, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Having even water feel like acid going down and burning sensations when you eat after a biopsy and then surgery sounds very unpleasant.
What were the results of your biopsy, austinconnell? What has your surgeon or his team said about the sensations you've had since surgery?
I haven’t received results yet, but I’m waiting on them referral of a gi doctor to contact me. The hospital i went to didn’t give me my surgeons name and I forgot who did the surgery so I can’t really contact them.
I’m having this exact same thing going on n had my procedure yesterday 🤷🏾♀️ what’s going on I called them tho
I had an upper endoscopy today and now having a sharp pain in the right upper quadrant. He took 3 biopsies and one being in area of my pain where stomach goes into small intestines. I have had biopsies before but never this type pain. Has anyone experienced this and did it gradually go away. If it is a perforation would I have other symptoms? If it still hurts I will call him before the weekend. Any comments appreciated. Thanks
Hi, @ann31 - wondering how you are doing related to the sharp pain you were experiencing? Did it go away, or did you get some input from the endoscopist or another gastrointestinal specialist?
