Had TKR revision due to recalled replacement
I am 5 months after TKR revision and still can’t get leg straight and range of motion is 100. Have pain. Sleep with brace to straighten leg which is not working. Had 9 dry needling treatments to relax muscles and ham string and quads. Had a manipulation under anesthesia that didn’t work. I am frustrated and some days depressed. I go to therapy 3 times a week since May and do many exercises at home. Bought an exercise bike and have a flexinator to help with range of motion. My life is at a stand still. If anyone can give me any encouragement that this will just take more time I would appreciate it. Thank you

This is such a long road to recovery.
Can you get scar tissue massages? With my revision I had so much scar tissue! I had a “shelf” line where they cut my tibia that was 1.5 inches high. It looked and felt awful. I use a high quality magnesium lotion on it twice a day and I got lymphatic massages to keep the swelling down and had them work on the scar tissue.
Also the exercise the really felt good was PT elephant walks (can look up on YouTube). I had to modify it just a bit but they helped a LOT!
Do you feel stable on the knee when you walk? Just can’t get the bend? Or are you in a lot of pain?
I walk with a limp since leg is not straight. I have tried everything to break up scar tissue. I don’t think therapist knows what to do with me. I have an appointment with surgeon in November and he said if there is know improvement with range of motion he will do orthoscopic to remove scar tissue. I just hope he didn’t do something wrong. I might have to get a second opinion.
When was your original TKR and why did you have a revision? How was your recovery with ROM with your original surgery?
First TKR was 2016. Had revision May of 2024. Had recall on part that fell apart. Replacement was loose and broken. ROM on first surgery was excellent. I was back riding my bike and golfing very quickly.
What a bummer lg16. Were you having sudden pain or other symptoms 8 years later and then found out there had been a recall on one of your parts? Did you have to have all 4 parts replaced or just 1 or 2? Do you know the make and model of your bad parts that were recalled?
Around 2022 I received letter from surgeon I had recalled parts. Then knee started to swell and ache all the time. I got my operation report and looked up serial numbers and found I had a defective part. Exactech is the manufacturer. My replacement was loose, broken and falling apart. Needed everything removed and new replacement put in. Exactech is supposed to compensate me for the inconvenience. Will see, that could take years.
Oh my goodness! Mine is made by Exactech. It's the Truliant model. Is that what you had? I'd heard about that recall. Having to do with how the parts were packaged I believe. I do hope and pray that the company rectified that problem. I'm 4 months out from my TKR and been having continued problems with painful clunking with every step or movement of the knee. Continued swelling and pain. Can't go downstairs or get up out of a chair without pain in the top of my kneecap. Just looking to find if anyone else is still having this problem almost 5 months out. 😭
Do you think the symptoms you started having warranted a complete revision. Are you wishing you would have kept your original knee unless or until it got worse or were they mandating you have it redone? Did you have the same surgeon do the revision and what manufacturer and model did you switch to? My doc keeps telling me to give it more time and I'm just over 4 months. I know revisions are much more extensive a procedure so that likely translates to a much more difficult recovery. I hope you get better soon. My doctor swore by Exactech even knowing they'd had a recall stating they rectified the problem. 🤷🏼
I couldn’t wait any longer to have surgery. I ached all the time and knee was swelled up. Different doctor did surgery, other one retired. My Exactect model was Optetrak. I don’t see on my operative report what I have in me now but I know it is not Exactect.
Hello, I haven't posted for a while...got depressed about TKR that I had on left knee a year ago, 9-15-23. It proved to be a problem, especially after comparing it to TKR on right knee 3-20-24. The pain and swelling continued to be greater than the right knee. Gradually the left started to hyper extend, "bowing backwards". It continues to be painful and swollen...also causing me to limp. After many hours of daily research I chose to see another doctor for a second opinion. Long story short I have revision surgery scheduled for October 29th. So far this doctor is doing more advance testing and taking a more in depth approach before surgery. Lots of prayers.
