Does any neurologist prescribe Alpha Lipoic Acid
R-ALA features very heavily on this forum as a potential remedy for peripheral neuropathy. Does any Neurologist actually prescribe it.

In my experience integrative and functional medicine doctors prescribe it, but not my neurologist. I do find it helps me. My integrative doc wants me to take a combo with NAC but I prefer single ingredients and right now am only taking ALA.
I have been taking R Lipoic acid, the natural form if alpha lipoic acid and it is helping do much.
My podiatrist suggested it to me.
You can but R-ALA on Amazon. Make sure it’s the R formula.
Two neurologists suggested I take 600 mg daily. Been on it for about 5 years. Does it help?? Not sure and I'm not going off this supplement to see what happens.
I bought some from Amazon a couple of years ago but asked my Neurologist about it before taking it. He was indifferent about it to be honest, he pretty much just with no enthusiasm said it couldn't hurt to try. I then asked by PCP about it, and she said she'd hurt good things about it from patients but advised me NOT to take it because I already had to watch my low blood sugar, and ALA had a tendency to lower it more. I was pleased with her thought out response and thinking about the side affects for my situation.
Read that drs in Germany recommend r- ala for neuropathy.
I'm taking it together with acetyl -l carnitine. And NAC is good for neuropathy too.
It's a supplement, so hardly any neurologist will prescribe it.
Maybe look up iherb website, Thorne is very reputable company for supplements. Used seeking health one, but they discontinued it, unfortunately. And magnesium is helping too.
how is it helping? I don't have pain anymore, just numbness and sensitivity.
I've been taking it ever since I started chemo that ended 2 years ago. My oncologist told me to take ALA. I still have peripheral neuropathy, but my cancer is in remission. I'm 83.
My neurologist prescribed alpha lipoic acid, shortly after I was first diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy. I've taken it ever since. I don't know if it has made any difference, or not, because I can't be a control on myself. (I can't both take it and not take it, at the same time.)
