When I was first diagnosed with diabetes I was offered pills or insulin. I chose insulin for many reasons, mainly the side effects of the medications. My insulin comes in a pen form and is super easy and totally painless to take.
Insulin cause weight gain, weight gain causes insulin resistance and vicious cycle continues. sulphonlyureas, DPP-4 inhibitors and insulin don't protect against macro vascular disease such as heart attack. Other oral agents protect against both microvascular and macrovascular complications.
I did diet and exercise for the first 11 years with A1cs in the 6s, then added metformin and glipizide the next 11 with A1cs in the 7s before adding insulin the last 2 years. What are you taking now, and how is it working?
Insulin itself doesn't cause weight gain. I have been on insulin (only) for 4 years and haven't gained a pound.
I've been on insulin for 2 years, and gained 15 pounds during the first 3 months on Lantus, and another 10 pounds during the next 3 months when Humalog was added. But if you need it, you need it.
