11 Yrs Post Rectal Cancer Treatment: Still have chronic diarrhea: Help

Posted by stouffer95 @stouffer95, Sep 10 4:32pm

I have to take close to 8 immodiums a day and that isn't enough some days. My rectum was completely removed (and I do not have a bag) creating a slip and slide effect. I use toilet paper in my crack to buy me enough time to get to the toilet. Frustrated. Help.

Try lomitil instead of Imodium. You will need a prescription. Imodium did nothing for me.

I have tried that one but I felt dizzy on it.

@stouffer95, here are a few other discussions that talk about persistant diarrhea after colorectal cancer.

But having it for 11 years is a long time. I can imagine that this is extremely frustrating and limiting to your daily activities, especially outside the house. Have you discussed ostomy options with your team or is that a non-negotiable for you? What other options have they suggested?

Haga te de hojas de guanábana ayuda mucho a esto.

Have you tried cholestyramine? I had 15 inches of lower colon removed for cancer 3 years ago and this has definitely helped solidify stools. It's in a powder packet that you mix with water and drink before meals.
A big congratulations for your 11 years!

I had my entire colon removed with the small intestine connected to the rectum and had the persistent and frequent diarrhea that results.

Even half an Imodium would cause serious constipation and even 1/4 made things too tight. Interesting how different we can be!

What Mayo suggested was a thick slurry of Metamucil for tightening the diarrhea. It took a lot of experimentation to determine how much and how often. Note that this doesn't reduce the frequency of having to go. Activities such as drinking too many fluids or getting dehydrated still can upset that balance. I avoid drinks with sugar and HFCS because of their effects of a diarrhea and try to limit fried things. There are some places I can't eat because of the kind of cooking oils they use.

So what does that mean for you?
1) The metamucil trick previously noted is worth a try but without a rectum who knows?
2) It may be worthwhile to look at your diet for things that make things worse.

A question for others since I have no personal experience. Isn't this a bit unusual to remove the rectum without doing a bag?

Wish I had a good answer for you.

Thank you for your comments. I was told my existing colon would create a similar type of rectum for me.

I will try the Metamucil but it was too much liquid when I tried it many ears ago.

Yes, most things that too sugary, salty, spicy, fatty, greasy, and even raw vegetables will start the avalanche.

The key with this unusual usage of Metamucil is to minimize the water to just enough to be able to gag it down so it helps absorb the other liquid in your system to get a more firm and controllable stool.
