Staying positive: How do you do it?

Hello all,
I am having a hard time staying positive as I wait for the letrozole to shrink my tumor. I seem to be fine until I feel an ache or pain that’s something new and then I jump to the worst conclusion and down goes my positive outlook. What do you all do to stay positive. I have until the end of October before I know if tumor is shrinking.

I am about to start my radiation treatments. I’ve been given a handout on cream called Glaxal Base Cream for burns. Has anyone used this or does anyone have any suggestions for something they found was better. A few weeks ago I saw a post where someone mentioned, what I thought, was udder cream. I just can’t remember exactly and I can’t find the post. Any help is welcome. I don’t know why but this has got me so anxious. After everything else I know it’s a minor thing, maybe it’s just the anxiety has built up. I feel silly saying that it’s an issue.
I only have to have 5 treatments but apparently they are quite strong.

My radiation dr prescribed a steroid cream which was really effective, when Miaderm wasn't taking care of my burns. You might want to ask your radiation oncologist about it!

I have trouble staying positive. Not sure what is next. After mammogram was a more detailed one, then biopsy, lumpectomy, and now told there was 2mm spot that now makes my breast cancer Invasive. Now I have to have a Sentinel node biopsy to see if it has spread. Not sure what the next step is but it is hard waiting. I don't want surgery but then the unknown is worse which is why I have trouble staying positive. I end up crying due to thinking about all of the "what if's" . Any suggestions? I think they term mine as Stage 1. They want me to do radiation but please pray I don't have anything in my lymph nodes.

I know what you’re feeling. I am a couple months ahead of you, i have lymph nodes that are positive but bone and body scans showed it hasn’t traveled. It’s hard to be positive when every little ache and pain throws me into a tizzy. This sight has been wonderful especially when you read the success stories. I have to trust that my Doctors, with years of knowledge and experience with BC, know what the best treatment is. Be aware of changes, ask questions, get outside and breath in fresh air and as many on this sight say, do the things and see the people that make you happy. Sometimes for me it’s easier said than done, but I keep trying. Hang in there and keep communicating on this sight if it helps.

Welcome to Mayo Connect, many members in this group have been in same place you are in. I think the unknown at beginning was the worst part of diagnosis. It seemed like there was always another test. I just wanted to have treatment plan and move forward.

After my biopsy, they did a MRI and saw suspicious lymph node, so did the sentinel node biopsy / removal during my lumpectomy surgery.

Have you already had the lumpectomy?

Yes, I had the lumpectomy already. I guess he didn’t see anything but had to send it out to have it tested. They found a 2 mm size that made it Invasive. I don’t want to go in for another surgery but I have an appointment to see the surgeon tomorrow.

Just in case there isn’t I wanted to answer your question - yes I had a lumpectomy. He didn’t see anything when he took it out & sent it to be examined. I am sure there are many questions you are wondering about. Nothing has to be decided immediately, so do not rush into any decisions.

Few topics you might want to discuss:
- Ask about margins, does surgeon have any concern about the margins (area around tumor).
- Have you had a MRI?
- Is there family history of cancer? You might ask about genetic testing; some future surgery decisions might be different if you test positive for certain genes.
- You mentioned in a previous post about checking the sentinel lymph nodes. That would be next step to determine if has spread out of breast.

You can always get a 2nd opinion if do not feel you are getting your questions answered or feel pressure to make a decision immediately.

Do you have someone going with you for support and to listen?

I had same experience.
Original diagnosis DCiS stage 0, but after lumpectomy they found 2mm invasive so my clinical stage ended up IDC stage 1a. I had to do separate sentinel lymph node biopsy, the surgeon took 2 nodes out. Blessed enough not to have any spread. Next course of treatment is radiation and hormone therapy.
Hang in there, I know it’s hard especially the waiting part. I cried so much during the overwhelming times too. The things that save me are prayers, and setting my mind up to I want to live to see my kids grow and be with my husband for a long time.

You are definitely not alone out there. The waiting game is soooo hard! Sorry you have to go through it all. It's so scary.

As for being positive, you have every right to worry and have your moments because it's all very hard. You're wise to come here and talk to people who understand what you're going through.

You're looking for ways to stay positive despite your worries. We can't help what pops into our mind, but we do have some control over what we dwell on. I was just reading about second thoughts. The first thought in your head can't be controlled (every mind processes the world differently), but we can control out second thoughts. Take some time to write down some happy second thoughts that can replace an unhappy first thought. Whenever you have a first thought you'd rather not have, don't let it get on a loop in your mind. That can go on for hours or days if you let it. It wastes your days and steals your happiness. Tell yourself, "Nope, I'm not going to think about that today" and brush your hands together to show you're finished with that thought. Next, start thinking about something that makes you happy (a happy memory, something on your bucket list, your happy place, etc.) The second thought doesn't have to be related to the first thought. It just has to redirect your mind and be something better to think about right now. We all have both good and bad things we can think about. Refer to your arsenal of happy second thoughts you wrote down. I keep them in the notes section of my phone.

Something else I heard from Joyce Meyer a couple years back that has served me well. It's important to start your day on the right note to set the tone for the day. I now start every day by saying, "Today is a day the Lord has made and I will rejoice in it. Today, something good will happen to me and through me! Who can I bless today?" I love this because it reminds me to appreciate and make the most of every day I have. It also helps me notice the good things that happen throughout the day no matter how small. Maybe someone gave me a genuine compliment, held the door for me (getting rare), took my shopping cart back, gave me a free sample, etc. Yesterday, someone told me they like my smile. It made my day and made me want to smile even more. One day, I was going for my morning nature walk (aka gratitude walk) and right in the middle of the sidewalk there was a single leaf in the shape of a perfect heart. I took that to mean God was sending His love to me today! You are loved! The "good will happen through me" part is totally within your control so do the same little things to brighten someone else's day. Making others happy always makes us feel happy too. It's a win-win.

Even in the midst of a crisis, good things happen to us all the time. We just have to be in the right mode to notice them. Much like the metal detectors used to find treasure on the beach, we can be "happiness detectors" finding little bits of happiness here and there. If you're in the right frame of mind and focus, you'll be like a magnet drawing the happy stuff toward you. The happy stuff will help you get through the difficult stuff. Those are some things that help me keep a smile on my face and enjoy my day. I hope they can be helpful to someone else as well. Prayers for you.

So thoughtful--and I was not aware of "second thoughts" but I see how that might work well. I agree that waking up sets the tone of the day. Often I just emphasize how glad I am--after a night of whirlwind dreams--to discover I'm right where I want to be, and grateful for the small house that has sheltered me for 40 years. Thanks for your helpful perspectives.

Wow ! Well said and for sure made me cry. I am trying too but very hard to accomplish that . I will print your beautiful positive note and maybe that will do the trick ?! The thing is we all know the theory however doing it is soooo difficult! Love and positive vibes to all of you ladies ! 💕🙏🏻
