Vocal Chord Inflammation after thyroid surgery: How long to heal?
Hi All - Two weeks post-lobectomy surgery and much vocal chord inflammation going on. I don't have much a voice at this point. Does anyone have suggestions on how to help with inflammation? Have you found that doing/not doing something makes it worse or better? The vocal chords were looked at with a camera during my post-op visit and there is no paralysis. The surgeon said all it needs is time. Thank you!

Hi, Things that can help with vocal cord inflammation are vocal rest, drinking plenty of fluids, lozengers to suck on; and trying not to clear your throat all the time. I also felt that my voice was strained when I tried to talk too much, but it’s important to speak in your natural voice … don’t whisper because whispering causes more strain on vocal cords. Always make sure you have a good head position when speaking and you have sufficient air to support your voice. Time will definitely help! However, if your voice remains strained you might want to ask your surgeon to refer you to a Speech and Language Pathologist who specializes in voice disorders post thyroid surgery who can give you specific exercises that can help. Good luck!
Hi - all great suggestions. I have been whispering as an alternative. I didn't know it causes more strain. I'm going to be mindful of my head position as well. I did ask about therapy and she said I was a long way away from that at this point. I'm not much of a wait and see person. I'd rather learn and do. I have appreciated reading all your post since I first joined the support group a few months back. Thank you!
I lost my singing voice. I use a lot of ice to bring down the swelling. I do think my Grand Ole Opre chances are gone.
Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that. Thank you for the advice. The doctors let you out of the hospital a couple hours after surgery with no direction. I appreciate it. Take care.
@gillsden, how are things going? Is the inflammation going away a bit more each day?
Hi Colleen - yes it is getting better each day. It feels very strained when I talk but nothing like week one! Thank you so much for checking in.
