Urge to pee: 2Qs about improving continence after catheter removal
Catheter was just removed after radical prostatectomy, and working on improving continence. 2 qx: 1) right now, kegels are a bit uncomfortable / painful … how soon did you all restart them after catheter? 2) not feeling the urge to pee, so starting to make it a routine to empty bladder every 2 hours or so. When did you urge to pee return?

I had my catheter removed yesterday. I was instructed to begin kegels as soon as the catheter was removed. I am experiencing some discomfort on one side of the perineal area but am able to complete some kegels while planning to work up to the recommended repetitions. Last night I woke up every hour. Three of those times I felt my bladder being full, went to the toilet and was able to start and stop my urine flow at will. However, I still experience leaking depending on my water intake and activity (coughing, blowing my nose, getting up from chair or bed etc).
Thanx “recovery” … continued progress to you, and thanx for the info!!
My surgeon told me to start Kegels as soon as the catheter was removed. 10 quick and 10 with a 5 second hold. I did them every hour on the hour. I had ZERO incontinence issues. Good luck
My doctor said to wait a few days after the catheter was out to start Kegals. There’s no rush, it will take a while to make a difference.
I tried to start Kegels after cath removal but it hurt, I waited 4 weeks before restarting.
I think the reason it hurt might have been that it takes time for the tissue to grow around those tiny whit surgical clips they put in to seal off the various plumbing to and around the prostate. But that is just my theory, I asked the surgeon and he seemed to think it was normal. I guess every surgery is different and we heal differently and sense pain differently.
At4 months since surgery, I'm doing 60 slow and 120 fast per day (broken into 3 sessions I do one after I brush my teeth after each meal). I need to ramp it up some more. I am using 1 full size Tena triangular pad per day. No leaking at night since day 1. All in all pretty tolerable and leakage seems to be slowly decreasing but is very much dependent on activity level and fluid intake.
