Do BC survivors have higher risk of ovarian, uterine, cervical cancer?

How many of you decided / were told to get a full hysterectomy (ovaries, tubes, uterus, cervix) because you're now higher risk for cancer of these organs after having BC? I'm finding conflicting info on this. I will have ovaries/tubes done since I need to be on an AI but I've heard that removing uterus and cervix may just be 'extra' surgery. But I dont want to keep them if I need to worry about increased uterine or cervical cancer risks either.

I am ER+ and Brca2. My diagnosis with breast cancer and with my age, the suggested removal of my ovaries and fallopian tubes made sense. It was never suggested that i remove the uterus too. What i know is my Bone Marrow transplant has me know connected for life with the COH. Cedars Sinai is where my breast surgeon is now and my medical oncologist. My breast surgeon said with BRCA2 i am with her for life.
Never ever a place i thought i would be. I know you feel the same. Together we support one another.

I spoke with my oncologist and I have to go back on lupron and get on mental health meds. Ugh not thrilled. Told I would be thee same way if I had my ovaries taken out. So frustrating

Are you sure it’s the Lupron causing the trouble? I’ve gotten the Zoladex shot (similar to Lupron) for years, and it’s never caused a single side effect. What DID cause me extreme anxiety and depression was Tamoxifen. When I switched to exemestane, boom, I was back to myself. I know everyone reacts differently to these meds, but I just thought I’d share my experience. Good luck!

I know they say that lupron is same as surgical/natural menopause side effects but I really do wonder if that is the case. Surgical/natural menopause doesn't have actual drug side effects and its well known that Lupron has its own side effects. Just my 2 cents... For me I can't see doing the shots for years and years so I'm going to go for the ovary removal at some point.

I know! But I’m looking at it from the other perspective 😆
I’ve gotten Zoladex injections (like Lupron) for two years with zero side effects. (I completely understand we can all have very different experiences with the same drug, though!)
For a few reasons, one being I pay $250 a month OOP for the shot, I’m looking at removing my ovaries. I’m worried about that affecting me differently (worse) than the shots, and it’s permanent!

Well that's true.... anytime you're on more than 1 med, its really hard to know which one is the culprit and sometimes its not just one - sometimes its the combination of them together. But its so hard to figure out, especially when we're all limited in how much we can stop/switch drugs since we need these treatments

I was on tamoxifen about 4 months before I stated lupron and did not have n issue. Zoladex I never heard of. Could this replace lupron? I was not offered an alternative.

Yes, I think most people can take Zoladex instead of Lupron. My oncologist originally talked about stating me on Lupron, but we ended up going with Zoladex…but I’m not sure why! Definitely ask your doc, and good luck. It’s bad enough having cancer, it’s rotten we also have terrible side effects which can affect people wildly differently.

I really want to know why that was not offered to me. It was lupron or just tamoxifen. Thank you for sharing with me I appreciate it. I wish you all the best. We will over come this!!!

positivity1- Advocate for yourself. As an example, my sister got hurt on bleacher stairs at her job. It took over 2 months, with an MD, orthopedic doctor and one who finally said let me send you to a doctor for shockwave therapy to get real help. All including the physical therapist said it would heal over time. The last doctor checked the scans, x-ray and read all the reports. He told her we are starting as if you are 1st being seen. Your ankle area still hurts because you have a torn ligament. Not a slightly anything. You have the pain you have been having because it is torn. He gave her a boot and instructions to comeback in a few weeks. For the first time she felt heard. The orthopedic doctor the 1st time spent 5 minutes with her and sent her to physical therapy.
If it hurts, we must not accept that is the way it is. Maybe it can be helped or possibly cured.

This is an excellent question & one I’m interested in as well!

When I first enrolled in the Mayo Clinic High risk breast cancer clinic the doctor did mention hysterectomy, but that was many years ago. Nothing has been mentioned to me on removing other female organs With my DCIS diagnosis recently. I don’t want to just assume that the newest literature does not support removal but I do wonder if that is the case. I plan to ask about this when I do follow up next week.

I'm not sure if one is really better than the other, they're both nasty drugs but some women feel better on one vs the other (kinda like one AI vs another AI). However, its important to check with your insurance b/c some only cover one or the other, some will cover both drugs, but given how expensive it is, you want to make sure its covered first. I also found that some doctors only offer either lupron or zoladex simply b/c thats the only one they usually stock in their office.
