Constant excruciating leg cramps

Posted by lfisher66 @lfisher66, Jul 16, 2022

I was “diagnosed” with Fibro in 2009. I had a false pos for Lupus and so this is what they decided I have.

My symptoms increased and decreased in severity for years. About 11 years ago I started getting leg cramps in my sleep. Sure, everyone gets them, but mine would be calf and shin simultaneously. I couldn’t stretch one or the other, because the opposite would spasm more and cause terrible pain. I’d have it for a couple weeks and then it’d disappear.

I went through times were I was very active, in the gym all the time, hiking, etc. but then I’d get, say, tendinitis somewhere and have to lay off.

In august 2021 I fell. I’d been exercising and walking—up to 4 miles a day— for a couple months. I didn’t fall because of pain or disability, I just tripped in a normal way. But I landed in my face requiring stitches in three places, and got whiplash.

Since then, I’ve been downhill. But the cramps! I started getting them in both legs at night. Both shins, both calves, the feet. It decreases in intensity, but hasn’t gone away. Then it increases again. It used to stop when I was up and around, but now both legs are pretty much in spasm all day. It spread to my hamstrings (never as bad), and now I have it in my forearms.

The rheumatologist found “nothing wrong”. The neurologist found “nothing wrong”. He put me on gabapentin, but anything more than 300mg once a day turns me into an a$$h*le. And doesn’t help.

The doctors literally wipe their hands and say, “that’s just your Fibro.”

Is it? I’ve never read about that with Fibro. 🙁

Precious Folks, I battled leg cramps for the longest time at night. I take 200 mg of Magnesium daily which has helped greatly.

Stay hydrated.

A teaspoon of mustard or drinking the brine from pickle juice also has helped.

Get your potassium, magnesium & calcium checked. Low levels of any of these can cause leg cramps.

Praying for all of you that battle this. It is so painful.

I suffered fro terrible leg cramps, thighs ((the worst) , calves and feet . Extreme heat helped, however I read Dr. Grundy’s book and he recommended
Magnesium potassium asportate caps found at the health store. That helped tremendously and I take it every day. Cramps are now rare.

I think that you are lucky that worked. For someone without damaged dendrites that should work. I have a nutrition background, did all the electrolytes including magnesium and potassium, and it helped with hydration, but certainly didn't handle my full body spasms and cramps. Digestion, limbs. Hands twisted up, fingers stuck like a witch, etc,
Then I learned that gaba is what releases the nerve. Also I learned that it us made on the dendrite.
With dendritic damage, the body may not be able to keep up with the gaba production.
We are talking severely paralyzed to walking with aids and dipping on gaba in my biosteel. That is what I'm talking about.
Glad you found something that worked.
I put the gaba here because there's a lot of people/kids etc with neurological damage that can cause some amount of terrible and painful paralysis, and I need the conversation to change to accept this as possibly best snd most logical practice.
Was paralyzed and sitting on the couch looking at journals gor 5 years before I figured it out,
So yes, I want to spare others.
If the electrolytes and minerals are enough, then maybe someone is lucky enough not to have that kind of dendritic damage that would hinder that biochemical pathway.

Sounds like you have the better option for your condition. Guess I just got lucky with magnesium potassium asportate!
My husband has neuropathy and has serious issues with feet, legs and hands. Will gaba gel help him? Do I have to get a prescription?

It was definitely correct to take electrolytes and minerals for cramps (check about preexisting condition the amounts and what forms of the minerals). That's an excellent place to start, and should be continued as a regimen.

When I first started my research on GABA, vee little information was there except for the GABA to relax and glutamate to excite, these work together to move the muscle (ie must release a muscle contraction in order to move)
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acide_%CE%B3-aminobutyrique
When I had stiff hands so painful, along with my other spasms, and the hospital said they don't treat that, I was forced to research. I literally googled MS hand cramp treatment, and an article came up about how they inject GABA for this and other spasms. I can't find the article now, but it was a medical journal.
Now there so much about GABA , that it's really adding confusion to something almost as simple as the neurotic sodium and potassium pump in the nerves. In cell biology they taught us the nerves operate on the sodium potassium differential to create a signal. So cool ☺️ that's why it's important to have good hydration like you have, with the proper electrolytes to compensate for your diet and conditions.

Gaba is the neurotransmitter that signals release of the contraction.
When I google GABA now, so many journals come up. It talks about receptors, pharmaceuticals that are similar.... but they are not GABA itself. GABA is on the succinate pathway, and made on the dendrite of the nerve. Autoimmune, (especially the Autoimmune towards mono - if we are accepting the suggested pathway that mono virus looks like myelin) can damage the dendrites. That would reduce the amount of GABA the body can produce.

I find that my fingers ususlly seize up before my legs, so that's when I take more GABA. Even if they don't know why GABA increases in the brain when supplements are taken, I can tell you that the effect on body nerves is palpable.

I can tell you with certainty that it works like clockwork taking an oral dose. For me, being on a liquid diet, I see effects of oral gaba in about 5-10 minutes. I put it into my biosteel drink which has all 5electrolytes. I walk, I take a break and sip, repeat.
GABA can make people drowsy. Because of this I suggest a small dose at night to start, and be around someone just in case. ..
I know lots of people that go ahead and take the entire 600mg capsule, had no symptoms, had no adverse actions, had leg spasm go away and a good sleep. I have heard of people taking that sane dose and getting all the benefits, but also found it relaxed their smooth muscle so they wanted to be near a toilet. I have not found that and I take a lot.

I take over 2000mg a day. As needed. Ie for movement.
Once I took enough to be relaxed a sleepy in the morning, but then I stretched my leg out (something that would normally use a lot of body gava so it would usually make my spasm get worse.)
The day I took "too much "gaba that I got tired, then stretched my leg, my body used the gaba and then I stopped being tired.

I have known dendritic damage. But a single gaba pill if not taking other nerve medication has not been found to have toxicity... just calm or drowsy if that makes sense. It doesn't make me drowsy because I'm using the amount I'm taking and it's unfreezing my legs so I can take another step. I mean, I went to university for nutrition, but I had to stop in my third year of school because I had a kid. It's still enough to know what medical information is pertinent.

I have multiple medical sensitivities, so these other gaba influencing drugs that affect the actual neuron seem like they don't address the actual issue of people with dendrite problems simply not making enough gaba. Also, I wouldn't want to take a drug that would prevent me from getting the actual thing. Gaba is a part of the nerve function, it releases the contraction.

I had a nerve spasm in my brain due to neurology, and actually felt like an iceberg was melting when I first took gaba. It was releasing it. I started with 200mg and my hand spasms, and my brain felt like an iceberg was melting but in a good way. If someone doesn't have neurology there, they wouldn't have that step. My fingers started to unfreeze, and we're mostly pliable at that dose.

I took the 500mg per day the next week, and saw instant results. Could move my hand.
It was trial and error. But now I know that it's not causing me problems to take the amount I take, it relaxes my spasms as I have them.
I still get spasms, but taking gaba predictably reduces the spasm in predictable time.

Others I met are taking it just for pain alone, 3000 mg per day. ... I would caution that without supervision etc,
Ie I know the cause of my neurology, and the issues with my dendrites. Taking a lot of any fully formed neurotransmitter could alter the body's use or production, I just don't know.
But it's the safest thing I've found, and regular health food store dose with a clean company should give relief, ftom stress and spasms. For more dose, stock up because you need to take it once started maybe? I needed it before I started, and my body did not compensate on its own, so gaba was a no brainer for me.

Blessings to you

It's a pill or capsule or powder to take by mouth from the health food store. Still pretty affordable as far as supplements. Look for a clean and reputable company. 500cor 600 mg is standard dose.

I put together a larger reply with links and much more information about it. Good luck ☺️

Good point. There are other reasons for pain that should be checked out.

I was talking about a response to dendritic damage which isn't talked about much , I guess because the succinate pathway being made on the dendrite is new news.

Thanks, I hope people go to their doctor to get the full picture

Your electrolytes are off you need to drink the drinks that put them back in your body so go to drug stores look for power to mix with water there’s a certain brand that I use if you can find it it’s called Nunn tablets best thing to do is ask the pharmacist what the store has for electrolytes… I promise it works but if you’re have nerve type pain which is different from cramps you’ll need to get a prescription called pramipexole

I am awake now because of my legs twitching and cramping after decompression surgery in March. Gabapentin dosen't do much for me. How much were you on ? Doe it help ?

I have excruciating spasms and twitching after decompression surgery in March. I had Stenosis for 7 years prior to surgery. A new Dr told me to take 2-3 Gaba at bedtime. I was afraid to take that much at the same time. Also, I had literally two sips of wine. Will I die ?(haha) but the internet says I could.
Not sure if I should take that much. Any thoughts and also interaction with wine or Oxycodone ?
Thank you,
annie
