Just because you get any vaccine does not mean you are guaranteed to not get that particular disease that it is given for. That is the goal of course and that is why herd immunity is important.
However, all of us have predispositions of some sort to various illness. Especially those of us with damaged lungs.

I’ve read that the vaccine protects against the most common and serious pneumococcal illnesses.

The vaccines offer some protection for those of us with lung conditions and disease.

Perhaps some people might not be able to take the vaccine (doctor or pulmonologist may recommend against it possibly) but many do get the vaccine for some protection against serious illness and/ or hospital admissions. That’s the reason I get the Covid and flu vaccines too.
