Urology Blood work different than PCP blood work
5 months ago I had my prostate biopsy, which came back negative. My urologist put me on 2 years of monitoring. I have the first appointment soon and they are going to do blood work for PSA. They also said they would do blood work that a PCP would not normally do. Does anyone know what this blood work is? Or what it monitors? etc? I'm going to ask the day I get the blood work but I can't find an answer online etc.

PSA blood work is just a standard blood test. I get them once a month but also have a lot of other things checked because of the drugs I’m on.
They may go with some of these CBC, ALT, AST, total bilirubin, vitamin d, calcium, vitamin B (multiple) and possibly creatinine and calculated glomerular filtration rate. Maybe A1C and urinalysis. You can’t really know but ask the Doctor in email, or ask blood draw people.
These are Some of the common test done if you have prostate cancer or they’re considering drugs that you might have to take in the future.
My 1st thought when I read your Biopsy p/athology results came back negative -- WHY DID YOU NOT HAVE A 2ND OPINION OF YOUR SLIDES .?
In my case my results came back negative from all the TARGET cores from a Transperineal MRI Fusion Biopsy .
I had a 2nd opinion of my pathology results . ALL CORES CAME BACK Gleason 3 + 3 = 6 . My next step was to go back and have a 2nd opinion of these results suspection they may have missed Gleason 7 . And yes some of the cores were Gleason 3 + 4 = 7 .
I am on avtive surveillance , much different from MONOTORING .
I suggest you purchase Dr. Patrick Walsh's Edition 5 book " Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer " , which is referred to on numerous occassions on this forum -- Money well spent .
It educates you on various tests , what the results mean , varous treatments and side effects and much , much more .
Good luck .

Maybe.
Yes, my PCP does run different blood tests. Now, my surgeon runs a full spectrum on my blood as well as my PSA and testosterone. My oncologist, runs my PSA and testosterone. It’s just to check how I’m responding to being off treatment.
