Anyone try bioidentical hormones to combat/treat osteoporosis?

I'm giving it some thought. After a bad experience with Alendronate, I'm very hesitant to start with Prolia.

thank you @nme1985! I saw the hormone Dr. yesterday and he did not want to deal with the bioidenticals - out of hand. Its not quite his specialty. He felt because I've been off them for 10 years I shouldn't go back on. Plus there is a cancer concern (mom died from extra ovarian cancer) but that is why I did the topical for 10 years (estradiol, testosterone, progesterone); I mentioned that someone else here mentioned their bone density went up 11 points from the bioidenticals alone. It makes TOTAL sense to me - you have hormones you build bones. No hormones everything deteriorates (aging process.)
I'm still getting a handle on the Tymlos. I have had both natural remedies and synthetics on different things - I try to learn as much as possible and be judicious.
Thanks for sharing your experience!!!

Me too. It's hard to make sense of it all and make the best decision for
me. I'm having bloodwork done on Tuesday with a follow up doctor
appointment after that. Thank you for your insights.

Keep us posted! I’ve learned a lot from this group. I’m getting a Pn1p test ( think that is what it’s called — only because I read about it here. I have a very good Dr. but he operates within a narrow rang. Unfortunately he is paired with a patient (me) who always pushes the boundaries!

Hi @loriesco if you are going to test p1np, might as well get ctx done at the same blood drawing, especially for your baseline. It's best to look at both bone markers together. There is a thread on this forum discussing this topic and some the preparations before the labs.

Doctors ignorance re bio-identicals is no reason to forego them. Do your own research. I was on them for years and loved what they did for my body as well as my disposition teaching adolescents. I am presently reading studies that indicate one is never too old for bio-identicals after being told differently and going off them. I am presently 74 and have osteoporosis and may not have the markers I have now if I'd continue.

I'm making an appointment this week to see about starting again.

My friend was on Fosamax for years and was informed by her dentist that her jaw was too deteriorated to have a tooth implant. And another friend ended up in the hospital for serious kidney issues after taking Prolia injection.... again, for years.

thank you for your reply. I do think its all a delicate balance. I've known for 20 years that cancer corners play in any HRT I do which is why I did the topical for 10 years. The endocrinologist said I have to go somewhere else for the HRT. But my tooth crumbled last night so I guess I'll be seeing the dentist first!
When you spoke about your friends deteriorated jaw it sounds like you think the Fosamax didn't help. And the Prolia caused the kidney issues. But they reason your friend may have been on the Fosamax is because she already had those bone problems and the Fosamax just didn't help that area. And maybe it wasn't the Prolia that caused the kidney issues but a doctors ignorance at pretesting for hypercalcemia and drinking enough water? I have never found a medicine that didn't have side effects. And we also have to do our own research now because the doctors are not doing it for us! the medicines are very powerful and we must listen to our bodies FIRST.

I have been on bioidentical hormones for 20 years. I am 67 years old. I’ve written on this site before and maybe my story can give you more clarity. I am not on any medicine because I went on a to El for a month and got severely sick. I was using the bioidentical creams. My first doctor was Dr. Erika Schwartz out of New York. She is a top specialist on this topic. I just started on the pellet Testosterone estradiol, and a pill form of compounded bioidentical progesterone. So far I feel great I have to say I have much more energy and feel generally better. I am really curious to see my next scan in February and if the pellet therapy will have made a difference, I’m still considered osteoporosis. I am willing to take the chance with the bio identical before I do synthetic drugs again. If you do see a hormone specialist, make sure they have a lot of experience with bio identical hormones. They have been around for years many of the regular OB/GYN’s are now using them. When I first started with this whole bioidentical journey, I was considered way out there. Your hormone blood levels must be monitored. Hope this helps a bit.

I am just beginning a protocol of bioidenticals…an estradiol patch, testosterone and progesterone. I just completed 2 years on Tymlos and I had great gains. My rheumatologist wants me on Reclast but my cardiologist suggested bioidenticals to assist with my lack of hormones and to potentially hold my bone improvements. I don’t want to be on an osteo med that is infused in my body for a year that I cannot stop if there are side effects. So I’m taking this route for now. I pray I will experience good results. I am 72.

What brand of progesterone are you taking? Is it oral?

I have taken The bio identical hormones for the past 20 years. No side effects. I am now starting the pellet bioidentical testosterone and estradiol 3mg ,also doing a compounded progesterone 100 mg. I am hoping it will increase my bone densitynumbers. I feel like you I do not want to be on medicines. Have you had your bone markers tested even though my endocrinologist had been testing the CTX for 10 years I was never told anything about it until I got on this site. Try to find a good integrative medicine doctor with plenty of experience. Remember, the drug companies are not financing the bioidentical so, they aren’t approved. I really feel it comes down to dollars and cents. Good luck and let me know how you make out. I love this site. It teaches me so much.
