How many doses does an 80mcg Tymlos pen have on average?
And has anyone ever considered injecting near the buttocks? I ask this because I have read some persons reporting an increase of belly fat when they inject Tymlos on their belly.
I did search and read that someone was injecting near their buttock area.
I pondered the many reasons injecting near the buttocks may or may not work - reaching the area to inject easily, vascularity, different or slower absorption? I also wondered if the absorption needs to be immediate or delayed to work and if a slow release might diminish the fast heart rate some of us might experience.
So much to consider!
I mean once the medication is under the skin where does it have to go but through the subcutaneous fat on the belly's and buttock's capillaries.
I would think the buttocks are not as highly/densely vascularized at the belly fat but .... is that the case?
As far as reaching the area, and IF the absorption is complete even if slow, I would find a way to inject in the buttocks if it would avoid the belly from becoming fat. If I did it, I would actually alternate sides.
Maybe there is a study which can explain it.
I am 5'6" and 102 pounds so there is not much fat on my buttocks ;( - it would seem it would absorb there just as well as my belly.

@dooshie my belly got puffy but I didn't perceive it as fat so that idea is interesting. Mine is back to normal. I have no idea when that happened.
Of course spinal fractures make my tummy stick out a lot more than Tymlos did, and there just isn't much room in there anymore.
Exactly! Which is why I called. I do prime the pens before the first use so it was concerning that there was a very large bubble and more small ones that appeared mid pen and wouldn’t go away with tapping. It looked like a swag pen you’d get at a convention the bubble was so large. They did disappear after releasing the dose into the air, twice. I check now carefully before every injection for bubbles. I should add, the pen was in the same place and no travel or temp change or any external causation. Radius rep didn’t seem as concerned as I was and I was comforted that I have 6 extra doses incase bubbles appear again - which they did another time.
@esb13 this is potentially very helpful to many!
I suspected it was a bad pen and Tymlos wouldn’t replace it for me. I have wondered if my poor P1NP increase after 3 months (yes, I am still obsessing about this) was because pen#2 was ineffective and I only had 60 legit doses not 90.
Good reminder to everyone to check for bubbles every injection.
Over the 2-year period of Tymlos injections, I occasionally would get bubbles in the pen even after priming it. Sometimes not until a week later, would more appear. Like @windyshores, I would just flick the pen with my finger, sometimes they would just settle at the bottom, sometimes float around, but I injected regardless. Don’t know why they appear after priming, but they do.
@windyshores…I’ve always had a bit of a belly. I’m small framed and weigh 120 but Tymlos contributed to more belly fat and weight on my hips. It’s not puffy, it’s fat. Some of my pants are tight but my eating habits had changed for a bit even though I’m very active. I’ll blame it on my age too…72 and takes longer to drop weight. 😂
I am about the same age @dooshie and I hear ya!
Hi everyone, I am on my 2nd pen of Tylmos, and have been experiencing a painful hip, as well as ankles & wrists. I was expecting the ankles & wrists to be sore but am surprised with the hip. Is the hip pain also a side effect of the medication? I sure am thankful for this support group!
Thanks, Trixi
A new pen has well over 30 doses. I'm guessing 35. I use a full dose, ten-second injection to make sure it all goes in, and there is always a decent amount in the pen left over after 30 days.
Thank you 🙂
