Spacer replacement 4 years after TKR
Has anyone been told their plastic spacer is too thin and should be replaced? My knee has been having all kinds of pain, pinching and burning sensations for months now. Xray shows implants are stable, but the spacer may be too thin and gives me the unstable feeling. Surgeon suggests going in and replacing, but not a fan of surgery. Anyone have it done? Successful? Wished they didn't? Thanks for any comments.

The standard 2 stage revision for infection. You can read about it on the web.
So, does the doctor think the revision caused the infect the infection was there prior to the revision surgery? I’m struggling to walk for long periods. I was better 3 months ago. My surgeon said that my inflammation came down so much there’s extra space causing the instability. He should me my Camry throat shows one side looks to have a slight more space.
I'm 18 month post op left TKR and have been told I may need a thicker spacer. Loose joint, hyperextension, pain and stiffness, clicking… the works. for those of you who've had a new spacer, is your range of motion ok? Worse, same, better?
I had both knees replaced at the same time 2015....rough but recovered. then 3+ years ago having problem with the rt knee, burning pain, instability. Knee brace helped, but eventually had a thicker spacer put in. Was better. Then the same thing happened with the left knee. Thicker spacer put in 9 mos ago, again hard recovery. I initially made good progress at 4 mo's had a big unexplained setback, glitchy painful, but I've stayed pretty active and I've been cycling throughout. last 2 weeks seem to have stabilized. getting back to more normal activities, I'm a cyclist and inline speedskater so easing back slowly. Now pain outside of rt knee which I think is tendinitis and IT Band rubbing. Stretching seems to help it. Also calcification bumps kind of a lot of them inside of the newly repaired right knee. I'm seeing the doctor again about it, but don't really know if there's anything to be done. trying to accept my new normal
My spacer was thin but my first knee replacement was done 29 years before I had a revision total knee replacement. I had to wear a knee stabilizer until my surgery. 3 years sounds to soon. Technology is suppose to be better.
I had my first knee replacement 29 years ago at age 37. I would knee on my knee which wasn't advised and I done almost everything but jump, run or skate. I had it replaced again last year. I didn't think you could do skating with a replacement. I thought they were made better now. My doctor only gave me 10 years for the replacement because of my age. Yours has only been three and one was that was replaced was 29 years and the other one I have will be 24 years.
I don't know if you are still having problems. I had a knee replacement 29 years ago before I had that one replaced last year. I went almost two years with pain after the first one. It felt like something was getting caught. My doctor sent me to 3 other knee surgeons. Finally the last one said it was a ligament catching on the implant. I had no pain after he went in and snipped it. He started doing that with all the knee replacements after that.
It’s been over 3 years now with chronic lateral knee pain, especially with walking and stairs. Feels pretty good with biking but I would like to take a walk! Ultrasound showed something is catching on the implant but last sports medicine doctor doesn’t know exactly what. Have been to 3 other orthopedic surgeons, two of which say I need a revision ☹️ but don’t know what problem is. Going to see at least two arthroscopic surgeons who have done this before. Operating surgeon didn’t have a clue about complications except for infection which has been ruled out twice. Thanks for your note as it gives me hope.
Let me know what happens please
I feel like that's what's happening with me with my right knee after a couple years of putting a thicker spacer in. I feel friction on the outside. I'm seeing my surgeon next week but anxious to hear what yours says. And I feel like the stretching to relieve ITB tightness and tendinitis has been helping, but read about possible arthroscopic procedure to shave a little bit. I found this article informative
