Taking alpha lipoic acid while taking levothyroxine for thyroid ?
I have taken levothyroxine for Hashimoto's thyroid disease for 10 years. Recently diagnosed with PN. Reviews of Alpha Lipoic Acid state that it can interfere with levothyroxine taken for thyroid disease. I have also read that this inteference can be avoided by taking ALA 4 or more hours after the levothyroxine. Anyone taking ALA and levothyroxine? Experiences?
Also, I take 10 MG pepcid daily for heartburn. Anyone else taking ALA and pepcid? Seems ALA can increase stomach acid.
Thanks for sharing any similar experiences

You can try B1 and magnesium instead of alpha-lipoic-acid.
Heartburn I cured with choped ginger in camomile tea, or quarter teaspoon of baking soda dissolved well in water.

I have Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism after having my right thyroid lobe removed due to a large suspicious nodule (2.5 cm). I have been taking 100 mcg of Levothyroxine for the last year but was started on 75 mcg in late 2022. Before this, I was diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy (SFN) in 2017 and now have peripheral neuropathy in arms/hands, legs/feet. In 2017, I started taking alpha Lipoic acid and Acetyl l carnitine for my SFN. I was also diagnosed with gastritis and esophagitis (caused by too much NSAIDs for chronic pain over 10 years) at the end of 2023 and started taking omeprazole 20 mg. My gastroenterologist and surgeon who will be taking my no -functioning gallbladder out told me that alpha Lipoic acid does not cause increased acid in your stomach.
What matters is when you take your medicines/supplements for best absorption and not interfere with each other. I take my levothyroxine in the middle of the night when I get up to go to the bathroom. This ensures a window of time to allow for it to be absorbed on an empty stomach (should be 2-4 hours before/after a meal or taking other medications). When I wake up, I take the Omeprazole 30 minutes before eating and then take my other medications after eating. A change in the acid in your stomach can affect absorption. I take my alpha Lipoic acid at night after dinner and have had no issues. My bigger problem is needing to cut back on caffeine which affect my stomach more than anything else. I have tried to cut way back on NSAIDs and switched to Tylenol for pain. There are times I still need to take an NSAID or use a muscle/arthritis cream for inflammation but I still try to use less than I would in the past.
Good luck!
I take Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism. I purchased Stonehenge Health's Dynamic Nerve Supplements which has Alpha Lipoic Acid. The package arrived today in the mail. I researched this but here is what the bottle says:
Ingredients in DYNAMIC NERVE: (3 capsules once a day with water)
Vitamins D3, B2, B6, Folate, B12
Alpha Lipoic Acid (600 mg), Benfotiamine, MSM (Methylsulfonyl Methane), Micronized Palmitoyferthanolamide (PEA), N-Acetyl-L-CArnitine HCL, Boswella serrato Gum Extract
Other ingredients: Vegetable capsule, Rice flour, L-Leucine, Silica
As I open the first bottle (I bought 6 for a discount), the capsules themselves are clear and the supplements are tan in color.
My goal is to ween off of Gabapentin (2700 mg per day) and take Dynamic Nerve to replace the pharmaceutical with the aforementioned supplements.
Gabapentin helps but leaves me a bit like a stoner at times. Bow hunting is close so when I start is the question. I am concerned that the transition will cause some extra pain without the Gabapentin. Pulling back my bow with accuracy is number one. I can't humanely shoot a deer if my pain is causing me to shake.
So, I also smoke and grow my own marijuana (beginner at 61). Perhaps that will help with the transition. I hope so because that PN pain is crippling.
Hope this helps! I will definitely post my results to ya'll!
Cheers from Minnesota!

bit of caution re alpha lipoic acid. It fixes mercury out of the body. So, if you have a lot of mercury dental fillings, it can be a problem.
It can pull the mercury out of them...and as it moves that mercury out of the body, it can basically give you a bit of mercury poisoning.
It happened to me. My mouth has been chock full of old mercury fillings.
I did not get horribly sick, just a little off. I did research, found out about the mercury issue and just stopped. And within a couple of days I was fine.
