What I don't understand is if steroids ruin your eyes at PMR levels given, what will they do to your eyes when given in enormous doses for GCA??????

The immediate risk of vision loss from GCA and uveitis outweighs the short term risk of prednisone.
The calculation changes the longer a person is on prednisone. The risks from long term use of prednisone increases with higher doses combined with longer duration. At some point in time, prednisone tends to do more harm than good in my opinion.
