Has anyone known of a young, healthy adult in their 20s to get double pneumonia so severe to be in critical condition? And, it’s not covid related! We have a family friend in that situation and I’m trying to understand. It seems very unusual.

Sounds immune deficiency related.

Yes, by thinking they were "not very sick" when they got symptoms and trying to keep going. By the time they collapsed they had pneumonia in their entire lungs and it affected the heart too. This was a med student who "didn't have time to be sick" during finals.
