Atorvastatin/ neuropathy
Concerning a post I read several weeks ago about atorvastatin possibly causing neuropathy, I contacted my diabetes doctor about that and got this reply. "Atorvastatin is known to cause a condition called myopathy (commonly known as muscle weakness or muscle pain). It is typically not associated with nerve damage or neuropathy. Neuropathy is more likely in keeping with complication of diabetes. I hope this answers your concern."

Thanks for your info,Even though the pain comes from my quad only when I put my foot down,I can feel the nerves causing the pain ,not the muscle itself,
I used to take Atorvastatin, because it was the least expensive, and then it was changed to Simvastatin because that doctor said he'd come across some research that showed Atorvastatin hadn't reduced the numbers of people ending up with heart problems, and Simvastatin's had.
I have severe peripheral neuropathy in my feet and legs but am not diabetic. Have been on atorvastatin for many years, and would like to get off it. Whats an alternative?
I get the powdered Gatorade from Amazon and use it on nonregular basis as I am diabetic. I want to try the no sugar Gatorade, Check with your doctor for another cholesterol medication.
Being quite “suspect” about the side effects of medications, I stopped my statin Atorvastatin for 11 weeks but did not see any difference in my PN symptoms.
Regarding elevated cholesterol … ZOE has done much research in this field: https://youtu.be/euSd9bsFwxc?si=BaFK5K--5tpPjGwo
petr Ask your doctor about Rosuvastatin it is the generic for Crestor. boomarang
Rosuvastatin was a big improvement for me over atorvastatin, re: side effects (including depression!) And at a much lower dose. My cardiologist wouldn't listen, so I went to my Primary care and she was happy to help me make the switch.
In reply to @terry1976 I am so confused about these Statin drugs. I was first put on Atorvastatin 20mg. However, I have Myasthenia Gravis my eye doctor (since retired) requested my primary care doctor take me off Atorvastatin 20mg. & put me on Rosuvastatin 20mg. Then my new primary care doctor ( old one retired) asked me why I was on Rosuvastatin 20mg. I told her my eye doctor requested it because of my Myasthenia Gravis. My primary told me to check with my Neurologist (cares for my Myasthenia Gravis) to see if I could go on Atorvastatin 20mg. because it would be better for my kidneys my filtration is low. Neurologist agreed, So, I now have a new prescription for Atorvastatin 20mg. What say you? Any input would be helpful. I could take more questions to my new primary care doctor next visit. I just hope they all have my best health interest at heart. Regards, boomarang
That's a conversation for your medical providers. Maybe discuss with your pharmacist as well. They are much more educated in drug interactions, and the like.
MG is both rare and complex
Have you access to more patient education resources to better understand what form of MG you're diagnosed with and a treatment plan to share with all the medical teams you see?
Reply to @terry1976 that is a great idea, pharmacist. Yes I have medication Pyridostigmine generic for Mestinon. I don't like being on the medication because of diarrhea side effects. However, of all the medication that I have researched for MG this one seems to be the better of all the rest. Give & take seems to be the medication game. My doctors have made me aware of all the different things that can happen when you have MG. The main one would be not able to speak. MG patients should all wear a medical bracelet for that reason. Unable to communicate. If you have to go to ER the medical team will see bracelet & will start evaluation of MG first and will continue other tests as needed. Thank you for your concern & helpful advice. My best, boomarang
