IOVERA for Knee Pain

Posted by leilaninurse @leilaninurse, Aug 16, 2023

I had a partial knee replacement 13 weeks ago, and I am experiencing severe Vice- like and burning pain. Many appointments later I’m scheduled for IOVERA next week, but I’m not finding anything that’s positive about it. Has anyone experienced positive outcomes???
Please help!

@bamma9

I had TRK on February 6, 2024 and had IOVERA therapy 2 weeks prior. My insurance did pay for it. Now my incision is healed and I have to believe the treatment did spare me a lot of pain. My knee is still slightly numb on the right side of the right knee cap, but that was expected at this point.

After a year i was told the nerve on right side of kneecap was cut. It may regenerate. It seems to be getting better now.

I just saw a commercial on TV about Iovera, an injection for knee pain. I looked it up on the internet and it is reported to last up to 90 days. It may be covered by Medicare.
Both my knees have had issues for decades but in the last 2 months the left knee pain is limiting my activates.
I would be grateful for any first hand information on this injection.

Because I have CRPS knee replacement is out. I just had my third zilretta injection. It works for me. I have problems with cortisone but the slow release in zilretta works for me. Medicare will only pay for 2 in a life time. Fortunately my private insurance with prior approval paid for my third. My pain management doctor calls my knee toast but thankfully zilretta allows me the ability to bend it and walk more normally.

Has anyone had a BOTCHED IOVERA?

Would anyone know if an MRI would show what he did to cause all this pain and discomfort?

Please if anyone knows please reply

I just had the injection too. Surgery next week and I am in so much pain and it’s been two hours and still in extreme pain from injection. I have a high pain tolerance level would rather give birth to twins than have this pain

Hi, @leilaninurse, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sorry to hear about your vice like feeling and burning pain following your total knee replacement. I'd like to invite @coffeecupp, @jmos, @josephinecarrion and @kathi65 to this discussion as they have all discussed having this procedure done in the past.

@leilaninurse, while we wait for others to share their experience, would you mind sharing what other things you have tried that may or may not have worked for you?

loved it! I had knee pain relief for almost two years from a Iovera treatment even though it was not supposed to work that long however, my pain clinic no longer offers it and the nearest place is very far away
Doctor said they were having issues with getting the gas that they inject. I have to believe him but it seems odd

hi I truly believe I had a botched Iovera two weeks before my knee Replacement surgery 8/19. it was most painful experience of my life and I gave birth to 3 children. the first injection he hit a vein and I had a huge hematoma that lasted several weeks. I had pain and burning in the injection site that has continued one month past my knee replacement. I’ve just recently reached out to Iovera to discuss how long it will take before the burning will subside and the nerve is back. i’m also considering having an MRI to see if there are any other damage did you have the MRI and what were the results if you don’t mind me asking.

Wow I am sorry ...June 28 I had it done and it hit nerves and God knows what else ..
His answer was let me do it over and it will get better or suffer 90 days ..NOT ON HIS LIFE
Was the PA

I cancelled the knee replacement cause of the pain...

How did you get in touch with IOVERA....On FB they will not let any comments that are negative ..What did they tell you ????

I feel as if I was being tasered all day and night at first in certain areas .. I would jump and scream out load...It is still swollen and so much pain ......

I think it should be taken off the market ...

I unfortunately had the same experience, he hit the nerve several times and I felt like I was being electrocuted. I cried all the way home and was in pain for the full two weeks before my surgery. In fact the only thing that hurts me now after the surgery is the injections sites from the Iovera.
I only reached out to IOvera today And literally had to fake that I was looking for a physician site to do the injection.
So I’m taking it that you didn’t have the MRI done??

It is almost three months since the IOVERA was administered and screwed up and it still hurts me so .....

What did you say to the Iovera folks and did they even care?

I did have an MRI done ...No one would send me for one so the Dr my husband and myself go to sent me for one but it did not show the nerves for some reason

I am so done with this yet I know I have to have the replacement .... I am old and never had surgery and I am terrified to be honest....and now I am told my shoulder on the same side is gone too .....I am ready to find a train that has no station
