Forteo vs. Tymlos: Which did you choose?

Posted by suze317 @suze317, Oct 17, 2018

I have to make a decision on Forteo vs. Tymlos and am not sure what to choose. Forteo has been around a lot longer, but has to be refrigerated. Tymlos only around 1 1/2 years but is shelf stable and seems to have less side effects and less issues with calcium. Can anyone offer their perspective? Thank you!

Hello Tymlos users. I am thinking about taking Tymlos (followed by Evenity) or just Evenity.
My Dexa numbers have remained constant after 5 months of OsteoStrong and daily exercise. -3.3 avg in spine and -2.7 femur. The reason I am thinking Tymlos 1st then Evenity is postponing a bisphosphonate to lock in gains. Or Evenity followed by BHRT. There are so many threads on this site and although very helpful it is dizzying. Any feedback from someone who has tried the above plans would be very helpful! I did have some pinpoint radiation for HPV related squamous cell anal cancer so not sure if that knocks out Tymlos??? I just mainly want an anabolic not the bisphosphonates but hesitant in general. I am very healthy and active now and don’t want to go backwards but also don’t want any fractures. I have one spinal fracture after falling on concrete. Suggestions please!

ostoresearch, hi. I'm not on Tymlos because I chose Forteo. I suggest that they are the best pharmaceuticals because they build the best bone. Tymlos may be a better choice. Radiation doesn't knock out the medication but it can make your bones weaker. And while your application was pinpoint it had to go to the bone to reach the tumor. I applaud your research and your decision.

I've been on alendronate [generic Fosamax] for seven years. My bone mass did not improve despite doing everything suggested ~ calcium, vit. D, weight-bearing exercise. Now I'm regressing and must consider bone building alternatives. Does anyone know the comparative costs of these two treatments?

My understanding was that Tymlos was more effective for the treatment of Osteoporosis in the spine; whereas Forteo was more for hips.

@lhankins, you may be right. Even though I lost bone density in the hips and femur on Forteo, I suspect that is because bone density doesn't measure the improvement int strength. I gained in the spine, but I think that with Tymlos I may have had stronger results in the spine and hips but especially spine. Tymlos is a lot more drug. 20 vs 80 mcg.

I came across this article today which cites a recent study comparing forteo and tymlos. It reports that compared to Forteo, Tymlos is significantly more effective at reducing the risk of “major osteoporotic fractures.” Since my major concern is avoiding a hip fracture, I am requesting Tymlos.

I gained 20% in spine and 9% in hip on Tymlos and was happy. (I did not take full dose but generally 7/8)

I believe but confirm with doctor or specialty pharmacist that Tymlos is slightly better for spine and causes less porosity in the hip. When I started Tymlos they were pretty much neck and neck in charts I could find. I chose Tymlos because the dose is adjustable. Some like it because it does not need to be refrigerated but I refrigerated it.

I based this on the recommendation of my rheumatologist who believed it would be more effective than Forteo primarily because my osteoporosis is in my spine. It is a more powerful drug than Forteo and as @windyshores noted there are other benefits as well such as, it does not need to be refrigerated the entire time; just upon receipt of the medication. After the first use it can be kept at room temperature. My scan came back with such an abrupt decline from the previous, that I needed the biggest boost I could get.
