Yes ... life is full of surprises. I can't imagine how frustrating it must have been to refracture after 8 months of Evenity. What a disappointment.
My OP diagnosis was actually a journey. After I fractured my femur in 5 places I asked the orthopedic surgeon why it fractured when the current DEXA scan was normal. He saw no osteoporosis in the Xrays either. He had no answer and suggested I make an appointment with a bone specialist. By the time I saw the specialist over 9 months later, I had broken a rib and suffered a very painful L2 vertebrae fracture. A new DEXA showed mild-moderate osteopenia.
The bone specialist diagnosed osteoporosis based on the 3 bone fractures with a 'false negative DEXA' scan. Apparently my bone quality is awful, even though my bone density is not that bad.
I am thankful I finally got the appointment with the bone specialist and the prescription for Evenity. Unfortunately, I will probably live with the results of that L2 fracture for years.
Since my DEXAs don't show osteoporosis, I am unsure how I can tell how effective Evenity will be. The bone specialist says the increased BMD is associated with increased bone strength, but there are no measurements that he can use to reassure me about my fracture risk.. (That's part of the reason I started this post to see how effective Evenity has been in reducing fractures in real people.)
I'm rooting for you too!!
