Bottom line .. have you finished Evenity and then fractured

Posted by juanitalinda @juanitalinda, Aug 24 11:51am

After three spontaneous fractures in the past year, my doctor prescribed Evenity. Given my poor bone structure the doctors and physical therapists have recommended I be very conservative in my exercise routines and life in general.

Many of you have completed your Evenity regimes. Have you had new fractures since then?

Did you wait until after the complete treatment before you started doing more aggressive weight-bearing or bending?

@juanitalinda , based on my experience and a few friends, I don't think most of us with severe osteoporosis and/or fractures are going to return to "more aggressive weight-bearing or bending" ever.

@windyshores

You are probably right about not going back to more aggressive weightbearing or bending.

But I need to be able to do more than I currently do.

I need to get strong enough to bring in the groceries and take care of myself.

I hope I can also do some of the things that give me joy .. and keep me healthy.
Dog walking. gardening. swimming. walking on trails and enjoying nature

I am hoping Big Pharma comes to my rescue.

Am I putting too much hope in Evenity and Reclast?

Well with fractures, years later, I am still taking groceries in by splitting them up. If I have an 8 pack of small 8 oz. bottles of water, I tear the packaging and carry in 4 at a time. Groceries can mean a few trips. I still slide pots along the counter. I take laundry down the stairs by dragging it. I recently saw an OT who said I was doing all the right things. I live alone- no choice.

I would not pull weeds out either, or dig much. Sorry! You may be different.

I can walk long distances, swim, and I do tai chi- not yoga.

Hello everyone,
I want to share my experience with taking Evenity. I’ve always been active, ate reasonable healthy and no family history of OP. Maybe menopause related??? I was diagnosed with osteoporosis (-3.5) in 2019 at 58. I could take OP drugs and 1200mg of Calcium and 2000mg of vitamin D3 or just take the vitamins is what my dr. recommended. I went with the vitamins. I didn’t realize how serious OP was. Fast forward to March 2023. I had one fracture in my spine. By July 2023 I had 6 fractures, between T-8 to L-5. Re-fractured T-1 and T-4. Dexa (-4.8) and lost 2 inches in height. My fractures came from everyday life….closing my microwave, sneezing, bending to get up from low seat, just movement! I’ve been using a walker since leaving ER in May 2023. In June I started taking Forteo. Forteo affected my liver count so I had to stop. July 2023 I started Evenity. After 8 months of taking Evenity, I had fractured T-2, T-5 again. The fractures came from being a passenger in my car ( I don’t drive) so my husband or daughter drives me everywhere. He hit a bump slowly on the freeway. I felt defeated and reluctantly made an appt. to see my doctor. I still continued Evenity the last 4 months. I still move slowly to avoid fractures and have back/bone/muscle pain. My endo says I still have a fracture that isn’t healing properly and the other areas in my spine are considered chronic pain. Finally, my bottom line! I realize everyone has a different story. I just think my experience with Evenity wasn’t the best but it wasn’t the worse. I would take Evenity again because I do feel better than I have in the last 16 months. Now I’ve just started Reclast on July 2nd😅 (another story) Stay strong, positive and blessed!

Hi @gg63 thank you for sharing your experiences. I’m very sorry to hear that you had multiple fractures. Have you and your doctors looked at any possible secondary causes for your osteoporosis?

This is a link for possible secondary causes (include meds-induced) of osteoporosis I found handy:

Wow ... you have had a tough time of it. You and @windyshores have convinced me that my life will not be back to normal for quite a bit longer. Like you, I was breaking bones by coughing, bending over to pet my large dog, and sleeping. And, like you, I am trying hard not to fracture anything. But, you made me realize, that fragile bones aren't going to heal quickly.

Just curious. Did you get a DEXA after your Evenity shots? Did it show much improvement?

I don't know what your endo says, but when I met my bone specialist, he said we would be old friends by the time my treatment ended. He suggested it would be 5 years before my bones were healthy. I was hoping he was exaggerating, but maybe not.

@juanitalinda my spine went from -3.7 to -2.5 with Tymlos, 20% gain. My hip went from -3.3 to -2.9. But my femur neck went from -4.1 to -3.7 and I don't expect to ever have "healthy bones." It has already been 3 years of treatment. I don't mean to be negative, only realistic, for myself. Everyone is in a different situation.

Thank you for your support and providing me the link. The information was helpful just in case I’ve missed something but I didn’t see anything that might be the cause. My Primary doctor and endo ran many test and along with blood-work. I also had multiple MRI’s, CT’s when I went to the ER. No new diagnosis. Thanks again🙂

Life is truly full of surprises! After I finished Evenity, I wasn’t interested in a DEXA because I couldn’t lay flat for too long. At the time 15 minutes was too long. Also, I felt since I had 2 fractures during month 8, why would I. However, now I am going to have a DEXA in November. Hopefully!

I’m rooting for you! When were you diagnosed with OP?
